Hey guys this is my first post and i am stuck to the point i wanna scrap the bike so here it goes

Also i wanna say sorry for bad spelling and grammer

So i bought the xj700 maxim x non runner the guy had it sat for 2 years but did start it a year ago and it ran fine then he didnt bother till i bought it

Now i have put a ton of work in but i am stuck

I have no spark i put it down to bad wiring as it was a mess

So hey lets rewire just the ignition system using the simple wiring diagram

Everything is in place srill nothing

Tested the coils and they are both within range which tells me its not the coils plugs are new

The only thing not connected is the starter cut off relay does this need to be in with the wiring? Even though no saftey wiring is connected the kill switch wire is cut

Any ideas would be great and appreciated i really dont wanna throw it away and lose all that money thanks guys

If you used the simplified wiring diagrem for the Xj650 and XJ700/750 airheads I'm not sure that it will work for the X.

My first suggestion is to get an unmolested wiring harness for a Maxim X. That way you can eliminate any potential errors that you may have made when altering the harness.

See i thought that and i should have mentioned this is the water cooled version

However even the original working harness wasnt giving us a spark and all saftey bits were bypassed leaving me to rewire if this helps

The battery is wired correctly to ignition and all tci wires are were they should be from Pick ups to coils etc i also have the service manual and followed bits off that too only the cutt of relay is out but from what i gather that only controls the side stand switch which is none existant anymore and indicators which are useless right now anyway?

Can you confirm +12 volts at the TCI input?

    Ground also??
solid black is ground and black with white tracer is ignition cutoff (for side and neutral saftey)and should not be grounded

In neutral you need the diode block to engage the side stand relay OR you need a side stand switch to engage the relay. As MLEW pointed out that b/w wire at the TCI must not be at ground, so if you have a side stand relay in place it will disable spark with its normally closed contacts. You can pull the side stand relay (blue dot) to remove ground at the b/w wire at the TCI.

Sidestand (kickstand) relay (blue): under left side cover, above regulator.

Safety circuits are important, particularly the side stand. Hopefully you will do as Kmoe suggested and get a replacement harness and restore the safety circuits.

I eill be installing the original saftey precautions for now though my only intention is to get the engine started

The bike didn't come with any saftey relays all were bypassed aside from the cutt off relay under the tank

So would i need the diode block installed to create a spark? The kickstand wire has already been cut

Everything is grounded as it should be

    Thank you

this could be the whole problem, you never had any spark so you can't say for sure it had spark a year ago. never trust the other guy.
you can test everything but the TCI, you need to find one that you're sure works.

How far off is the previous owner? Go and knock on his door and ask him WTF he did, at this point you have nothing to lose if he tells you to sod off, but everything to gain if he can shed some light on the problem.
Just my two peneth worth or to cents as the y say on this side.
