    Hey guys,

I'm building a XJ750 and want to change the tank. Ive found a XS650 tank but its a fair distance away from me so have no way of seeing how much mods ill have to do to fit it. I don't mind doing a bit of welding on the tank but don't want to change the frame in any way.

Has anyone got experience or know how much work would be involved in the conversion.

    Cheers for the help!

If you look in the technical chat section there is a thread all about tank swaps. Cheers.

I have not compared the XS - tanks with the XJ - tanks. I will do one when I get a chance.... Maybe this weekend

Which XS650? There are variants of the tank.
I do know that most XS650 tanks have an entirely different rear mount than the XJ750 rear mount, so that will have to be modified regardless.

The tail mount is different, it is not a "drop-in" fit

This is a 1975 Standard XS650 tank, the big tank, compared ot the smaller Special tank. I have a similar one in my shed (1976).

If this is a XJ750 Maxim, then I think the XJ650 Maxim tank will fit (but it is smaller) as well as a XJ750 Seca tank. But as with all tank swaps there are extended issues (side panel/seat fitment, fuel gauge/sender incompatibility, petcock clearance, etc.). You should go to the tech talk area or look at Chacal's tank info. FWIW there is a project here abouts where the author used an early CB750 tank fairly easily. The difficulty is getting the right wide tunnel tank. RE: XS750 tank fitment, look up "Project 'Shadow Warrior'"

The 650 Maxim tank and the 750 Maxim tank, regardless of year '80-'84 are 100% drop-in interchangeable with NO modification necessary. The only thing to keep in mind is that some of the 750 Maxim tanks had a sending unit in them. The 650 Maxim did not.

If you drop a 750maxim tank onto the 650maxim, all you have to do is tie up the sending unit harness, then ignore it for the rest of your life.

If you put a 650 Maxim tank on a 750 Maxim of those years, and the bike has the Atari cluster , then you'll have to contend with the indicator showing an empty tank. The '83 750maxim had the gauges like the 650 Maxim.

Since the 750 Maxim tank is an upgrade for the 650 Maxim, I don't know why anyone would want to 'downgrade' a 750 Maxim unless it's strictly looks over range.
