Looked everywhere, cannot definitively tell if my '82 XJ650 Maxim is YICS. I bet someone here knows. ;)

Assuming I do - Do I need the YICS tool in order to sync the carbs? What happens if I sync without one? Where does one find a YICS tool? (I checked Yamaha site - no mention). XJ Monster seems to be years behind in filling orders, assuming the website is up to date. Or is the ONLY way to make one myself (I don't have any machine tools besides saws/drills etc.)?

Sorry for the basic questions. Lots of mentions of YICS, but couldn't find the basic one(s).

Look on the valve cover or crank covers :) If you dont have markings there, then look for this bolt on both sides of the engine:

If you have YICS, then you HAVE to block off the passage in some way in order to get a proper sync. Rick posted a way to do it with nothing more than a piece of clothesline, a coat hanger, duct tape and some Marvel Mystery Oil (HERE). But if you want the tool, contact Chacal either via PM here or chacal AT mindspring DOT com. He has them in stock ready to ship.

If you DO have a YICS bike, I can make you a tool if you're not up to the task. PM me if interested.
I made one for Switz; he seemed to like it.

The above link should take you to a diagram and how to build your own tool.

And YES you DO need a YICS tool to do the job right (and have a really smooth running engine)
