    HI Guys,

I have a line on these gauges - pic attached...

They are from an '85 Virago xv700 or 1000.

Will they hook up to my '82 XJ750J? Are they mechanical/electronic or ??

Also am attaching a riser pic from a 91 virago. Someone posted here that that a riser from an 84 virago worked - are they a generic item or bike speciific?

Thanx for your time and attention.

    Peace,

    PY

From the automotive side, any time I get a customer looking for an aftermarket gauge to hook up to his stock electrical sender, I have to remind him that gauges and senders are paired. Sometimes you can mix and match, but don't be surprised if you get weird readings. Generally, you have to use the sender that was made specifically for your gauge. I would have to imagine the same applies here. Did Yamaha change their senders between the models and years in question? Find that answer and you'll have your solution.

Are they electric and mechanical? If the speedo and/or tach heads have a threaded stub sticking out of the bottom where a cable would attach, they're mechanical. As for the risers? You're on your own, there. I haven't a clue. :?:

Gonna find out if it works or not... can always sell em...

Gotta remember to measure that riser bolt center...

    Thanx Gamuru for your reply.

Speedo should be mechanical and the tach should be electrical. Not sure if the sender will be the same for the tack as the virago should be a v-twin as such. Also you may have to make an adapter for the mounting studs. To add to this you will have to do some constructive wiring for the lights and the neutral lights. fuel light will not work without modification also. I am not saying it cant be done, but it will take some time and some patience. Good luck. It will look really good once done.

The Virago tech gets it signal from only 1 cylinder [rear], so it would not matter as long as you only pull signal from 1 also.

not like on a car where the signal wire picks up all the cylinders that fire and so the tach must be programmable to know how many cylinders ya got so it reads right.

Here's a bit of info ( copied from http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/7795/ ) that may be of interest if the tach doesn't work correctly....

" There are two ignition coils for the four cylinders. What this means is that each cylinder gets twice as many sparks as it needs, one during the compression stroke for ignition, and one during the exhaust stroke. The only reason for the extra spark is to simplify the ignition system and use two coils instead of four. This is possible because the one and four cylinders and the two and three cylinders move in synchrony (with different valve timing). This is important to remember if you ever connect a tach to the bike, 2000 rpm will read like 4000 rpm. "
