I have a 1982 maxim 750. I want to install a new set of handlebars but it currently has the ugly two piece bars that attach directly to the upper triple trees, what can I do to make it so I can install regular handle bars??? I'm not really looking to swap the triple trees, or get into anything too deep. Just want to put on a simple set of bars and go. What do y'all have for recommendations?? Thanks everyone.

The "ugly" bar mounts unbolt from the tree. You can then bolt on regular 7/8" clamps from a Seca 750 (and several other models).

At some point (sooner rathar than later) you will need to remove the triple trees in order to service the headstock bearings.

I'm in the process of doing this now. Recently rebuilt my front end, still have the ugly (and mine are extra ugly) stock bars. I'm ordering a set of 7/8" Daytona bend bars now, and grabbed some 7/8" risers from eBay (new, they were $10ish). Just remove the existing handlebar mounts (splined shaft things that the handlebars pinch on to), stuff the new risers bolts down the existing holes, and call it a day. 7/8" bars let me use the existing controls, and I'm HOPING I can get the bars into a suitable position to continue using the really angled master cylinder for a while :)

Well, that's the plan. There's certainly some assumptions being made with regards to bolt and hole diameters, but I'm pretty sure it'll work out.

Daytona bars will not let the original master cylinder set at the proper angle to work correctly.

I've looked into longer cables and would like to just get a set of high apes, am considering building my own hardtail rear. May just get lowering shocks though or build my own struts. I'd like to go with 18-22" apes, I can extend the wiring myself I just gotta get the longer cables. And yes I can already tell that master cylinder will be an issue. EBay has lots of cheap handlebar and control options so prolly gonna just pick up an aftermarket one. I'm also having issues finding saddlebags that won't be too big to fit between turn signals and passenger pegs, all three that I've tried came past the passenger pegs too much.

You can relocate the turn signals.
You can have cables made at any bike shop, from Chacal, or get the materials to make your own.

Hmmm =/ well there's that. eBay has 5/8 bore MC's for 7/8 bars with 10mm banjos pretty cheap, so that's an option.

Sort of annoying to yank a recently rebuilt MC though, on principle. Well, OP, there you have it.

I'd assume buckhorns would work fine, as you'd be preserving the bar shape/angle.

Another thing to keep in mind with regards to saddlebags is the height of the exhaust, if you're still running stock. I can't even hang my helmet on the helmet lock without it riding on the exhaust.

With apes, you may not need a different MC? So long as the ends tilt downward you'd probably be fine. But yeah, lots of cheap eBay options there either way.

Signals as well are really cheap and easy to move.

650 handle bars or XS1100 bars will work. if you can find a set of 83 xj750 maxim bars thats the way to go

Yeah but im.looking for something higher, like at least 16" at a minimum probably. I've found a set of gangster apes, that curve inward on the upsweep amd are 22" And am considering them, I've also considered drag bars on high riders, like 10" riders maybe. How high are the 1100's bars?

I have been considering the exhaust situation, would really like to just put straight pipes on it amd call it a day. Have NOT found a single company that makes a set for these so not sure what next step will be, may just take stock muffler set up off of bike and throw some straight pup style muffler tips on it that are of the right size and call it a day. Does anyone know how these sound with straight pipes? Do they sound bad or no?

RE: the helmet on the exhaust. Put the passenger footpeg down.

RE: keeping bags off of the exhaust. Make bag supports out of bar stock.

RE: the exahust. Straight pipes don't make inline fours sound like you think they will. They just sound loud, not "better".

However I habe heard online fours with straight pipes that sound like crap, I'm sure tuning has a little to do with that. The one I heard had baffles in the straight pipe so I don't know what fully straight pipes sound like tbh.

If you make it wright than is loud ok wright and can be better.
Becouse iif i understand abouth exhausts, they are made for stop loundnes and gases,so industries made some stopers inside and coat.
Corect me if im wrong,i didnt never open one of xj

The stock exhausts are already very free-flowing. They reduce sound by turning the flow so that the sound waves are muffled, but not the exhaust flow.
Loud is just loud. It dosen't make the bike faster, or sound better. There are machines that sound great unmuffled, the XJ isn't one of them.

    Straight pipes sound AWESOME.
Custom bent my own exhaust several years ago.
4 Straight pipes. 2 down each side.
Sounds like a Monster. Loud, crisp and Mean.
    And ya. More power too.

Seat of the pants dyno. Real world.
Most importantly, just sounds way too cool.

Nominal sampling error of ± 50%

BTW: Test equipment is real world.

You being happy with it is all that matters though.

K-moe, can you point me to some additional information about positioning the master cylinder? I plan to replace the handlebar on the XJ650RJ and would like to read up before I make a mistake.
