well first time here, but i baught a 82 xj650rj i do believe a few months ago. It was all cut to hell and everything was missing besides frame and motor basically! I payed 150$ for the bike here is some before and current build pictures of it! Iv rewired everything using the motogadget m-unit (which is amazing) and started it up the other day.

Very nice. I have an munit which I'm installing on my build for the same bike xj650rj.
Looking forward to see how your build turns out

Did you havr to buy the mbutton to get your switches to work with it! I think it has to be re programmed to use factory switches

Those rear shocks , are they the inexpensive ones you see on eBay.
Thinking of those to replace the ones on my Xj750rl that are sacked.

I bought the mbutton for my setup and new switches to have a low profile bar setup. (I'm ditching the old switches). But you shouldn't need the m button. All it does is allow you to run a single wire from the m unit to the front of the bike vs, like 5 wires to the front

Spend some money and get good shocks. YSS or Progressive are very good for the money.
IMHO even used originals are going to be better than the cheap/fake "remote reservoir" shocks.

My original ones have no oil in them literally pogo sticks. Have progressive on my xj650rjc but want to keep the oem piggy back style on 750.
Len has a pair of oem ones in his parts list but omg are they pricy. That being said they are probably the only pair on the planet.

RFY's are hit or miss. mostly miss. It will take you some time to finish the bike, in the meantime you might want to create a new shocks fund.

The main problem with the m-unit that i found is once you have it, you tend to want to upgrade everything. The biggest annoyance is how it handles the turn signals. when you flip the switch to go left, it works. The m-unit will do an auto cancel (if you want it to). When you go to use the signal again it wont go on until you push in the signal lever at the center position.

The reason this happens is that our bikes uses an auto cancel based off of voltage, once at temp/volt it would reset the switch and shut off the blinkers. With the m-unit, there is no resetting the switch, just stopping the blinkers. If you cant live with that then you might want to look into upgrading the handlebar control too.

Interesting point. My thought is if you pick up the m unit you might as well upgrade the controls. Gives you the flexibility to design the bars the way you want. Can't wait to get mine hooked up. But it does add up $$

That is nice. Have you figured out where to place the choke lever? Thats the only thing stopping me from upgrading my controls.

This is something I've been struggling with as well. I've a new set of bars coming, grips, MC, etc... But still using the stock controls and despite some rebuilding, the switches are badly worn and unreliable/inconsistent.

However, needing the choke has complicated things.

I bought #1 and didnt use it. I didnt like the bracket just sitting on the handbars. it looked chincey.

Let me know how the pull choke works out.

Yah I'm not sure about the choke bracket. I bought it for my old maxim when I was trying to put new controls on it (since the stock ones were starting to fall apart).
But I will post updates in my build thread about the new choke when I get to it.

Baker - sorry for hijacking your thread

shit idc! im also gona do a pull choke, just get a cheap one from tractor supply and cut it too length and put it under my seat or tank! but i also have a m button on the way! and im gona put a baja style switches on mine! the only things in using on my bike is hi low beams for headlight and a horn, no blinkers or kill switch. i also rigged mine up on a key ignition like a truck, so i have no start button also.
