On a 82 650 ( any possibly other models ) what is the small, long, rectangular-ish, pocket thats located under the airbox? It's closed on the right side, but is open on the left side...

    Here's what I'm talking about:

( The space under the side cover )

Mine is empty, and has been since I got it, but I was just wondering what that was originally used for? I was imagining a toolkit or something similar...

I believe it is for the lock chain that came with these bikes.

It's where the chain and lock originally went. Legend has it that they were keyed to work with your ignition, but I don't think anyone has ever seen one. :)

I put a 12v power outlet in there for charging my phone and gps on long trips.

I wish it were close-able. It would be a good storage area ( registration, insurance, spare cloth, tools, etc ). Has anyone made a little door or similar?

    That's a really good idea...

Still got mine. I was confused as hell when I got it. It says "power lock" on it and based on the location and those words, I thought it was some crazy hidden apparatus for disengaging the shaft drive, hahaha. I guess it's a reasonable idea given the words printed on it, the location, and that the 550 (chain drive) we've also got didn't have one? That or I'm just an idiot.

    Whoa!
    Those locks are Vintage!
Stockers HAVE them right in place.
    They're called: 2-Whackers!

Not only do I have the Chain and Lock that IS Keyed to the Ignition, in there.

When I detailed the Bike ... I stripped-off the Black paint and brushed it to make it look nice.

I remove it when I wash the bike and put it back ... oiled-up and Armoraled nice; too!

Now, I have a feeling that I can't cross-over to the Dark Side, and should leave the handlebars ... stock!

(That lock is a "Two-whacker"! That's how many whacks it would take to shatter it open and roll the bike away!)

I still have mine and it works great. But after I removed the box it came in (when I chopped the bike) I stuffed it in the leather tool pouch incase I ever find a use for it. >PD<

So I think the REAL question is:

Who has actually ever used theirs? hahaha

I picked the lock on mine to get it out, keys wouldnt work. Then I tore it apart to examine the innards. Took me about 1 min to pick it without skill! I like the 2 wacker bit. I thought you meant thats how many times you hit the cars to make sure they notice you...
