So I just got my 1981 seca 750 and it's been running great. New oil rebuild carbs and cleaned her up. But a few days ago she started grinding upon trying to start it. It won't start every time and when it doesn't it just sounds like the starter is free spinning. Is this just the starter or something else??

Coffee can with gravel in it sound?
Do the easy stuff first, check you battery voltage at rest, then whilst cranking. Post back what you have.
Strongly consider going through the wiring on your 36 year old bike and make sure connections are clean and solid, bring some die-electric grease on that journey and pay special attention to grounds.

What kind of oil did you use? Synthetic oils can sometimes cause starter clutch problems.
Might also be time for a starter rebuild. Chacal has a nice kit with ALL the parts you need.

I actually was able to check the voltage last night and there was barley any voltage. while cranking and it does sound like coffee can with gravel. I'm gonna go threw and check the grounds like you suggested and replace battery.

bad battery/needs charge or starter clutch
sounds like low voltage what voltage did you get?
you should be reading directly off of battery for first test of voltage drop
the starters will spin with very low voltage

My Seca 750 does this when hot , it is starter clutch slipping ... at some point I will pull engine and split the case and replace . Agree if you have synthetic oil this can cause starter clutch to slip . Mine does not do this every time one thing I did was switch from 10w40 to 20w50 oil (motorcycle oil) this has helped
