Are you sure there are 2 per carb bowl? On mine (a 550 with mikunis), it has a screw at an angle and then a drain hole where you can attach a tube with the right adapter.

Ya I do have two on each carb , IDK why they would do that, they must make two bowl models, one with one drain per carb and one with two per carb, I was on eBay and the do have both choices for the carb bowls, I'm trying to get a pic

I bet if you look carefully, there is a drain screw in one side, and the other is just and empty, unbridled and untapped boss. Some bowls came with the extra side in case a screw got seized---- the bowl could then be drilled for a new one easier than trying to drill out and likely break the original. If term is indeed another screw alread in there, some one has already drilled and tapped for a replacement on that side.

I'm a dumb ass, just pulled the carbs off, the other side is just a plug, I just glanced at it and figured it needs a screw, dude I got it from said he was messing with carbs so I just figured, oh well one less thing I need for it, Yamaha wanted 23 bucks a screw

I'm having a similar problem, at first when putting the carbs back on, I noticed what I thought was 2 missing float bowl screws, upon further investigation with a flashlight, I realized 2 of the float bowls do not have drain screws, only closed off openings with no threads in them, so no screws can even go there. But looking at my other xj650 (both bikes are 1981 xj650's) I noticed the 2 float bowls on the right side of the bike hold drain screws, and the 2 float bowls on the clutch side of the bike do not have drain screws....but on the bike I'm working on now, the far left (clutch side) float bowl is holding a drain screw, and the third float bowl (from the clutch side) is also holding one, with the far right (brake side) being empty. So, starting from the clutch side on the carbs I have a drain plug on the first carb, no drain plug on the 2nd, a drain plug on the third, and no drain plug on the 4th. Does this mean I have my float bowls mixed up? Does it really matter which ones are where? Like I said on my other 1981 XJ650 starting from the clutch side I have : no drain screws on carb float bowls 1 and 2, but a drain screw on carbs 3 and 4. Does this matter?

Hey dave! Thanks for replying! I've got the screw issue sorted out. Apparently on the 1981 xj650 model I have (both of mine), there are only 2 carb float bowls with drain screws, the other 2 just have non threaded "openings" in case one day you decide you want to drill through them and thread them to provide more drain plugs one day. So, this issue has turned into a non issue (don't you love when that happens?, I do!). My new issue has to do with what I think may be a battery or electrical problem, I've started a new thread on it, I'm not sure if I can "tag" you in that thread, I'm still learning how to use this website. But I just posted it, maybe you can meet me there and invite others to chime in. Thanks again for all of your help brother, I may be giving you a call or text tomorrow, let me know if you can find my new thread with my new issue- thanks again my friend!

Those aren't normal. They are most-likely bowls that were inadvertently put on a bike. There are a couple different styles of bowls...... One style has only one boss for the drain screw, and the the other style has two bosses......one is for the drain screw and the other is indeed a blank that was available in case there was the need to drill no tp for a new screw.

Each bowl should have a a screw to drain the bowl. Bowl 1 and 2 screws face to the left of the bike, bowl 3 and 4 screws face to the right of the bike.

Occasionally parts did leave the factory when they weren't supposed to....or left the factory as a factory replacement part for the repair shop or the owner to finish.

    Dave
