so i have my 650 motor out and I want to degrease and give it a fresh coat of paint. What are some techniques you guys have used. I'm thinking simple green and soft bristle brush. Thoughts?

That's what I used for cleaning mine before painting. Did it a few times over a few days. I've also need using a dremel with a cleaning brush to get into the fins really well

Super Clean, by Castrol, is the best degreaser/cleaner I have ever used (better than Simple Green). This stuff is caustic and will give you a head start with removing paint too (if you leave it on too long); but it slaughters grease. Take care not to leave it in contact with naked aluminum for more than 10 minutes or so; it will start to etch it and leave a white chalky deposit (aluminum oxide?). One plus is it's water soluble, so no nasty fumes; but don't get the sprayer mist in your eyes or inhale it.
Never apply any degreaser/cleaner on a hot engine - warm is okay.

I've had pretty fair success with Gunk foaming degreaser during general cleaning as a step "beyond" Simple Green.

Doesn't sound like it is as caustic as the Castrol mentioned above, which sounds like it would be good for really serious grease removal prior to painting.

What do you recommend for degreasing if keeping your paint is a high priority?

That sounds like nasty fumes to me!

start with a paint brush, cut the bristles about in half. then get a quart of kerosene and have at it. when the grime is off just use dish soap to get the kerosene off.
if water beads up it's not clean enough. a final spray down with brake cleaner, then paint
