I purchased an XJ 650 a couple of weeks ago and it's a strong runner. It recently developed an oil leak at the drive shaft. I have pictures to make up for anything lacking in my description. The cardboard in the photos is well used so ignore spots other than the circled oil, which fell after about 45 minutes of being parked. Any help with diagnosis and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I used the search function to find this topic: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2 ... +leak.html but I'm not sure if it's the same issue. Also, where could I get the proper seal? I think that pretty much covers everything!

PS: I hope these pictures aren't as ridiculously huge on your screen. I resized them in photobucket but they keep loading big even after clearing my cache.

Thos pictures ar HUGE. It is almost disorienting looking at them. Next time make the pics a bit smaller. I found using photobucket makes it easy to post pics on these forums in the correct size.
First of all did you change or check the oil in your bike? There is an overflow tube that comes out of the airbox in that same area. What sometimes happenes is that gas will get in the crankcase and flow out of the airbox. Check your airbox and see if there is oil in the bottom. If so check to see if it smells like gas.
Other than that as far as I can recall there is no oil seal around the driveshaft other than the ones that are in the engine case or the one farther back near the gear housing by the rear wheel.

    Fixed

I check it regularly and it seems to be going down pretty fast lately. I've been refilling the oil as needed but have not done an actual oil change.

The previous owner installed crappy pod filters. Maybe oil is coming out of the tube and onto the ground? If so, what should I do with this tube?

Ok, it's definitely the shaft oil that's leaking. Where can I get new seals?

    Clean it; first.
Get all traces of Oil and grime off the affected area.

If its still coming from inside the Boot, ...
You have to replace a Seal on the Motor behind the U-Joint.

You'll have to take the Rear-end down to get to it ... But, it's NOT as bad as it looks!

Im having the same problem, did you ever get it fixed ? Im having a horribly hard time trying to find anything online about the seal on the engine side of the drive shaft. I jusr purchased the bike and has been sitting for years. First time outting it in gear and now has a good leak out of the boot at the engine.
