Bought a 82 xj750d during week very clean previous owner disclosed that carbs were put in by owner before him. But does not know what bike cane from

So took it out on highway nice pick up to about 150 kph or 93 mph than sort of hesitates to climb higher due to age and no history did not push harder . Not mechanical minded so are carbs causing it to bottom out at 95 mph?????

Carbs are what model? Hitachi, Mikuni
Jetting may be the issue. Or valves haven't been adjusted causing weak cylinder pressure.

Regardless of what carbs are on it, I'd start by making sure that the carbs are in serviceable condition by doing a full tear down and refurb. Figuring out jetting is really difficult if the carbs are in need of service.

Just directed him to xj4ever catalog on his other thread. Also asked if they were Hitachi. Damn duplicate threads! If only a moderator were watching...

YOU CAN Spanner with the best of us (unless there is some physical defect that is preventing you - and if so I am terribly sorry about that...) Read this over and know that if I can do it, you sure can to!

Rear brake shoes are known to delaminate on old xjs, causing a complete lock up. Pretty deadly at any speed. Hose life expectancies are 4-5 years. Date of manufacturing is stamped on hose. You do not want to mess about with your life on the line. Either inspect these parts, or have the mechanic check them out.

Check the link in the top right corner. XJ4ever is the spot for EVERYTHING! Catalog is so comprehensive that it can be used as a parts reference. Or start a conversation with member Chacal, he's the guy running the show over there. You will get what you need. When I first joined here, there were so many positive reviews for him/xjforever that I thought the whole forum might be a front for the shop, but no, they're just that good.

I have an 82 Maxim 750 and I usually refill at 120 miles. That is just me being conservative though. I haven't even hit the reserve tank by that point. I'm not sure what size the 750D tank is, but I think it might be smaller than mine.

That will vary a lot. Speed limits have a huge impact on fuel mileage. Out here in the land of "what speed limit? I thought that was just a suggestion." I can get anywhere between 35 and 50 MPG (U.S. gallons). I live on the Great Plains, so wind plays a huge role as well.
When the U.S. speed limit was 55 MPH, the XJ750 was getting around 45 MPG in magazine tests.

This has pretty much been my experience. 45mpg is average, but I can get north of 50 just highway cruising.

I suspect that the original fuel-injection system on the D model would boost fuel milage by at least 5%.

Kind of makes you wonder why someone would take the thing that made the 750D unique and slap carbs on it...

That thing probably stopped working, and since it's a pretty low-numbers machine, and none of the parts were ever officially exported......
What's a fella gonna do? Fit carbs, or scrap the bike?

    Steve....

Do not ever take your bike to a shop or mechanic. They will just take your money.

With the advice from this forum...you will learn to be the best mechanic for your own bike.

A lot of guys on this forum....walk the walk and talk the talk. Heed their advice

Time and patience are needed with these bikes.....tasks may not always go as planned or as fast as you would like

But once dialed in....these bikes will surely put a smile on your face as well as pulling your arms out of their sockets when flying down the road.

Probably one of the few left in the entire world's roads!

Which may give you 2nd thoughts about how much road use that you want to give to it.......[/b]

The key words are "in Japan." Rare is always relative, and even in Japan there aren't too many.
