Does anyone know why the windshield for the XJ650G/H wouldn't work on a XJ550H? From the attached picture the mounting point looks the same, but I don't have a a 650 to compare with. The brackets mount to the front handle bar clamp bolts.

there is a reason why after 1981 Yamaha stopped putting them wind screens and farings on the 550 seca.
    causes instability.

correction RH and RJ had cowlings

So what you're saying is that basically the rounded shape of the windshield caused the wind to push side to side and not just push straight back?

650 4-3/4 inch outside if riser to out side or riser, handle bars 7 " before upsweep curve

    xj 550 6" upsweep

I've driven mine with and without. Overall, I find I get less wind in the chest with it on and find that more comfortable. Also, they did put the front cowl on the '82 Seca 550s.

But, that does explain why I see some red ones with and some without (granted, lots of them get taken off).

yes at higher speeds what ever that is you start to get a wobble going but that also included the faring
also see spacing I posted above
check spacing on 550 if it is same should fit except for the angle I see the mounts are on the risers

    650 risers are flat

    That explain
That explains why over the years a lot of people have asked me if my aftermarket windshield causes instability.
In fact, mine never has. It is similar in style to Slipstreamer Turbo Fairing. The lower mounts attach to the headlight bucket side bolts, the risers to the handlebars.

Do you have a steering dampener on there? I believe that yamaha added this to the later faired bikes to counter the headshake from wind acting on the bars. Either that or it was a popular aftermarket option, I can't remember for certain.

I wonder if I just haven't gone fast enough to feel this? Must be higher than 85MPH,

No dampener. In its youth, I've had it up to max speed with the windshield on. Our speed limit is 80mph and it cruises fine, even though I rarely exceed 65mph for sustained driving.

the big problem he will have is the risers (handle bar clamps) are angled may be a good thing may not

Mine doesn't get wobbly until I'm doing 160. Without the windscreen I can only do 120 before I feel like the wind is going to push me off the bike.

I'll probably live longer without the windscreen.

My solution was to use the XJ550 mounting brackets which attach to the top pinch bolt on the forks and a NOS Virago Mini III windshield with some extra holes drilled in it. It helps with the wind in the chest a bit, but obviously not a perfect solution. I have the rounded XJ650 Mini Cruiser windshield if anyone has a use for it. $20 plus shipping or pick up locally. The windshield is in excellent condition.

My bike (XJ750) came with an OEM Fairing and had the steering dampener. I never could tell if it really did any good... as i never had the wobble. When I switched the fairing to the "parts bike" for testing (sans dampener)... It had a wobble above 67 mph. I had read alot about the bicycle style neck/stem bearings... for other bikes (my VTX 1300R).. So, I ordered a set of All Balls Tapered Roller stem bearings, and installed them about 4 years ago. I now have no wobble at all, even up to 91 mph, which is how fast my GPS said was my top speed during my trip to the Vintage Yamaha Rally last weekend.
