Air filter and jet kit

    Hello. I have just bought me 1986 XJ700 Maxim and I have fallen in love with it. Happy with power and everything, but I want it to run as smooth as possible, also longievity is important for me as I ride looong trips at least once a year. Would hate engine problems in the country which language I don't speak. That said, I plan to install K&N air filter and a jet kit. Also best possible plugs. Why are K&N clamp-on air filters sold in 4 pieces set? Is there any performance difference compared to usual box-shaped air filter? What Jet kit would you reccomend? Is there any better option like maybe improved carburetor? What else should I think of?

    Not even change to K&N air filter? I am kind of used to them 'cause they last as long as the bike does.

    1. They don't really filter much.
    2. They cause the fuel/air mix to run on the lean side, causing rideability issues.
    3. Yamaha had the best engineers in the world at the time they were developing the XJ series. The only thing you'll gain by altering filters and jetting is time spent tinkering in the garage.

    Don't plan to gain anything, they are convenient to clean. It's the first time I hear that K&N don't filter much - how so?

    They flow more air, which requires that less filtering happens. You will actually gain something; a lean stumble.

    Where do you buy them? All I run into om the internet are UNI OEM replacement and K&N. UNI boasts both better filtration and higher airflow than stock. Haven't found a single paper filter yet, and my guess that if I do the shipping will cost as musch as 5 filter package

    I've seen that linked article before. Even though I've already read it and I know from anecdotal evidence, it STILL surprises me how badly the knn performs. Bottom 3 in almost every category, with the uni only slightly ahead... Unreal when you consider their reputation among gearheads.

    It's branding - shining package and bold statements.
    OEM filters are nowhere to be seen...

    But you're right, shipping to Norway won't be cheap.

    A stock paper filter works perfect ... My bike had a K&N filter in the airbox installed by previous owner ...works great in my spare parts box.... Bike ran horrible with K&N
    As long as carbs are set up correctly and been to the church of clean, and valve clearance adjusted and carbs synched right it will run like new . Skip or mess with items involved you will be "tinkering" constantly . Stay away from PODS and "stage jet kits" you would be amazed how bad your bike runs (or not even run) Poor fuel mileage, popping of exhaust, flat spots ...and my favorite do not get caught in the rain ..PODS love water but your engine not so much .. ;)

    I've had my XJ550 since 1985, and never run anything but NGK plugs that match the OEM specifications.

    Enjoy your ride.
