An automatic cam chain tensioner that will work with a 1982 XJ bike. Please provide me with a picture (PM me for address). I want to see if an auto tensioner can be adapted to a 1982 XJ550 that originally had a manual tensioner.

    Thanks in Advance.

Nope, it won't. I broke my 550 tensioner and saw my mate down at the wreckers. Pulled all the tensioners off his 650/750/900 xj engines and they were all different angle and hole spacings.

550 engine parts are not interchangeable with any of the bigger brother engines.

    This includes carbs, boots etc.

    Pardon my noobness :)

An automatic chain tensioner is the one with a 10mm bolt + lock nut sticking out from its right side? For it to take up slack the lock nut & the bolt need to be loose to achieve timing chain tension.

poo. So I am stuck with the manual tensioner.

Maan, what you speak of is a manual tensioner. An auto-tensioner has no bolt to loosen in order to adjust. You simply spin the motor over then quickly reverse direction to create a slack loop in the chain which the tensioner will extend to take up, thus tightening the chain.

Oh well, I guess I will just be removing and cleaning the one I have.

aaahhh i see, thanks for the heads up :)

The manual tends to do a decent job on its own i think, if the guides & chain are healthy, one wont need to reset it again in years to follow.

My bike has 8000 miles so I don't think the chain should be stretched and need to be replaced. Not sure about the guides, but for some reason I just can't get it to stop making noise. I want to clean the tensioner and make sure it isn't sticking or full of gunk before I go dealing with major part replacements.
