    Hi,
I'm new to the XJ world. I needed a bike to ride with a buddy in Syracuse, and picked up my '83 Maxim 750. I was quite impressed with the bike. So much so that I had my buddy trailer it down to NC, his house. I flew out there last month and we rode to Daytona bike week. What a blast.

I had it delivered to Tucson, where now I can play with it at will. It has 32,000 miles and runs great. The idle is high when hot. I understand that's probably a tune-up / balance issue. So I'll be adjusting valves, and balancing carbs in the not too distant future.

I currently have an H2 and a water buffalo. It's been a couple years since I've had my RD350. It was a quick little bike. So I'm relatively new to the Yamaha world. Any words of wisdom for this new Maxim owner? Anything special about the 750?

    Seeeeeyaaaaaa,
    Ron

I'll bet you wish is was a 6-Speed.
    Nice ride down to Daytona.

If you are able to go down the road great distances without issues ... you can't be too far "Out-of-whack"

Learn to do "Plug Reads" and Tweak the Pilot Mixture Screws, INDIVIDUALLY, to get the right Burn happening in each hole.

You only have to move the Pilot Screw a VERY SMALL amount to go from too Rich or too Lean.
If your Idle isn't stable ... you might need to do some Pilot Adjustments.

    Not much.
But, just enough to stabilize the Idle and improve performance.

I just recently did my valves and carb synch for the first time, they aren't very hard at all. Just a system to follow, time consuming and patience is key. Having the right tools makes all the difference. Carb synch was kind of agrivating the first time around, and a colortune plug made setting the mixtures pretty easy.

Good luck and welcome to the forums!
