Pulled off the head today, for an overhaul. And I see the stud bolts have a black sleeve on them. Which are all crusty and crumbly. There is no reference to these sleeves in the Haynes manual, or on the Team Alpine parts list. Would they be for heat protection or stud alignment, or maybe just stud protection. (aka shaft cover). And of course my next question, would I have to reinstall new ones?
    Have you seen these Rickomatic?
    Thanks for your input all.

By now you saw my post asking the same question:

I haven't touched mine. I may try heat shrink tube or maybe just a bit of paint. Either way, I don't expect to have head stud trouble before the final death of this motor.

Those tubes are to keep rust off the studs.. When rusty the studs keep the cylinder block firmly stuck to the cases Not Good for rebuilding.
But as you say the thng's days are numbered.

I think those sleeves are installed to make the manufacturing process go more quickly.

You can ditch them. I've seen plenty of engines without them. The studs are going to be isolated once you put the block and head back on. They only help getting the thing together and apart.

You probably will never go back in again. If you do ... you might have to mallet the parts to disassemble them.

    No big deal.
