so just at random the other day my bike decided to pee gas all over the garage. No idea why but it made a huge mess and the house stinks now. It looked like it all drained into cylinder one which I heard was normal when the petcock failed due to it being in the side stand but mine was on the center one. I got a rebuild kit for the petcock but it still seems to leak. What else should I be looking for? I was hoping not to have to buy a new one but that’s what I might end up having to do. It’s an 81 XJ650 Maxim. Thanks

Did you follow the rebuild guide?

Rebuilding the Yamaha Vacuum Fuel Valve w/pics

Polishing the internals is a vital step.

Fuel getting into the engine isn't the fault of the petcock. You have at least one failed float needle, or stuck float.

I tried. Since there’s no more pictures I didn’t have a total idea of what is bad and things. However when I pulled mine apart and cleaned things I didn’t see anything that stood out.

Well the reason I think the petcock is bad is because if I disconnect the fuel lines it still dumps gas. Which if I understand correctly being a vacuum operated one it shouldn’t.

Is set to PRI OR ON set to PRI OR RES gas will flow set to ON only will flow with vacuum if it is stock pet cock . You may also have needle valve leaking so your engine maybe full of gas as well. Open the oil filler cap take whiff if it smells like gas ...you need to drain it and refill after fixing petcock and or needle valve.

It’s in the on position. I think it’s leaking out the vacuum line though now that I’m looking at things. Not the actual fuel one.
