I'll try to make this as quick and thorough as possible. 81 xj650, 30kish miles. Followed the church of clean and got my carbs pristine and fitted with new shaft seals. Re-shimmed the valves, installed new coils and plugs. Still having idle issues. Plenty of power and rides great while cruising, just doesnt want to idle without cranking the idle screw so far that I have rev hang and high idle when warm. Just synced and colortuned yesterday. Bright Bunsen blue flame in all cylinders, but a quick flash of white every few seconds during a stutter at idle. When I checked shim clearances and ordered new ones following the chart, most of the intake shims had zero clearance. I'm thinking I may need to shim again because they may have never been adjusted prior to me buying the bike. Just wondering if any of you experts think there may be another issue before I pull the valve cover off again this weekend. Thanks in advance guys!

the valve shims should never have zero clearance, i don't know the specs off the top of my head but i would start there. Also on your color tune, if you are getting a white blip every few seconds can you pinpoint what cylinder its coming from? if you can you might want to recolor tune it and make it a lil richer. The color range i usually go for is blue with a very slight and i mean very slide touch of orange on random pulses. On throttle blips you still want some blue with orange fluttering through it.

Keep in mind its better to run slightly rich than lean. running lean you can blow a hole into a piston.

The white blips are occuring on cylinders 1 and 3 mainly. Those were also the tightest cylinders when it came to shimmimg which led me to believe I need to shim again due to sheer neglect on the previous owners behalf. Ill go a tad richer tonight and see if anything changes and re-check clearances this weekend. I appreciate the quick reply. I like to think I'm heading in the right direction, just wanted to make sure I'm not missing any steps in my restoration efforts

Have you checked for air leak on the intake manifolds ? My Xj750rl did the same thing and found one bad gasket and one cracked manifold.

Yep. New manifold boots. Even sprayed with carb clean to check for leaks

How have you synched carbs? I use the 4 vacuum gauge manifold start on #1&2 then 3&4 and use the idle knob to bring idle to proper RPM set mine at 1100 this brought all 4 cylinders to 1.5HG

I have a 4 gauge manifold, but one is broken so I synced 1 and 2 together, then 3 and 4, then synced 2 and 3 to each other then double checked all ports to ensure equal vacuum
