About a month ago I saw this bike for sale. Needs some carb work (maybe), has a junked up tank (tank liner). Other than that it's very nice. I let time chip away at his starting price, because people don't buy non-running bikes. Now he is down to what I want to pay for it (less $$'s than it has CC's). I pick it up tomorrow. Pretty sweet! Progressive shocks, basically new tires, polished up nice, good paint, 31k miles, plus an extra gas tank (the original) and a couple boxes of parts. Not to mention the king/queen seat... I'm pretty stoked.

I just bought a black 750 tank, so I'll probably just swap my good carbs over to this bike along with the 750 tank and see how she does. Then I'll put my stock 650 tank back on my red bike and see if I can get a 2nd ride rolling with his carbs. It'll be good for my brother to roll with me. He's an old (very old) harley (very harley) guy, but he doesn't have a bike and I can tell he's itching to ride every time I ride past their place.

I'll probably be asking for advice soon. Now I'm just happy. I'm getting the carbs, exhaust, etc. They just aren't in the pic.

My current 82 XJ 650. Not "the original." The first XJ 650 I ever rode was back in 1989, but I don't have a pic of it.

Picked it up today. There is no word for this deal other than EPIC! I got the bike for $600, not running but I was pretty sure he just worked the carbs into oblivion on it. "Restored"ish. Brakes done, new master and lines, new plugs, wires, coils, some top end work done, Progressive shocks, front end rebuilt, king/queen seat, everything super clean, fuses all redone and labeled, battery tender, the module that flashes the tail light. THEN THE DEAL GOT EPIC. He had boxes and boxes of parts. ANOTHER brand new set of Progressive shocks (full length instead of shorties), another front end, multiples of lots of parts like ignition switches including one matched set of gas cap and ignition switch, a complete tank liner kit unopened, another tank, the original seat, gasket sets, instrument clusters, headlight and full set of blinkers, alternator... manuals... the list goes on and on. Wait for it... an entire 2nd rack of carbs. I would guess close to 100 parts. All included.

EPIC! He was sick of dealing with it. It was his wife's ride and she bought a new zoom-zoom power rocket to ride. So it all had to go! He originally wanted a lot more. I spent a few weeks getting in his good graces.

Got it home about 7:30, pulled the tank and carbs, swapped out the tank and carbs from my red Maxim. It started right up. No Problem. I'll send the carbs off to get rebuilt next week. In the meantime I'll probably just ride it. When the rebuilds come back I'll put them on my ride. Epic! Not gloating, just very pleased.

I rode her down the road this morning. She is fully operational. Stiff suspension, strong brakes, louder than my red one because it has a new 4 into 2 "megaphone" exhaust. The seat is a lot lower (for shorter legs), not my favorite, and it's much stiffer. But I'll probably ride it exclusively until I get the carbs back for my red bike. This bike's name is "Your Bike." My red XJ650's name is "My Bike." Because I got this bike so other people can ride with me - wife, son, brother, whoever comes over who can ride. So I can say, "That's Your Bike, this is My Bike. Let's go!"

I haven't ridden Your Bike enough to compare to My Bike, but I suspect it will run the same since it has the same tank, petcock and carb rack. I'll take it on a longer excursion once my cell phone is charged. I don't want to take an untested bike to far from home with no way to call for a rescue mission.

Not yet. I took it out. (difficult) I'll try running with the box on my carbs before too long. (if I can figure out how to get it back in)

did not want to risk that"your bike" would run better than "my bike" if you left the air box in it?

I expect it to run the same too.:(

    ;)
Actually I was looking forward to trying the air box Your Bike with my carbs from My Bike. Unfortunately the battery that came with Your Bike was DOA. The only other battery I have on hand (and I have no cash right now) is my oversized ETX16 battery from My Bike. Since that battery can only fit into a bike with no air box... bye bye air box. When I get some extra cash I'll get a standard sized battery for Your Bike and (as long as it starts on a standard sized battery) I will try putting the air box back in. Although I really don't know how I got it out in the first place.

My hope is that Your Bike can have the carbs rebuilt to airbox specs. I don't want to buy two drag petcocks. They aren't cheap.o_O

If you want, you can leave My Bike in My Garage. Or Your Bike? I confused. You'd better leave both here til I figure it out.

"your bike" bike is the one I recently bought. "my bike" is the one that I already had. Why do I call them that? Because I want to get my wife riding, but she doesn't like me forcing things on her. So I just told her "I'm not saying the new bike IS your bike. I'm saying that new bike is NAMED 'your bike.'" If I say "your bike" about that bike 100 times to her then she'll start riding it. Plus it's lowered already and has a "queen" seat. i left off the king part when I showed her.

Thanks. I am a mechanical moron, so hopefully I won't need to use any of these pieces. Reading the old threads from Skippy gives me a good idea of how much work he put into the bike over the years. It's still nice to have them. I was able to figure out how to bolt on the extra set of Progressive shocks to My Bike. Really helped stiffen it up over the (probably) originals that were still on it. If nothing else I have spares that I can try to rebuild (like the forks) while leaving My Bike intact and function.
