The caps on my carbs are rusted, chrome is crapped out. I was thinking of painting them flat black or satin.... I saw on the xjcd that these tops have a spring under them. So the question is, can I pull these off to sand/paint without having to do a bunch of work to the carbs afterwards?

    Has anyone done this?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes you can. I would send them out to be blasted and powder coated. I personally took my rusty ones and wire wheeled them clean and painted them. The paint flaked right off within a few months. Darn chrome. Just be sure to cover your carbs after you remove the caps and you should be alright. I also recommend replacing all of your screws with Stainless so you don't have corrosion problems later. I used stainless and anti-seize, haven't had a problem since.

Are they available anywhere new? I've not seen them anywhere.
I've been wanting to do something with mine also.
I'll be sure to sandblast mine, and not paint over the chrome, thanks for that bit of info Robert .

what about just wire wheeling them? did they look decent after that before you painted?

Nope, corrosion pits tend to ruin finishes. They were too far gone. Another point, if the corrosion is light, use a brass (not the brass coated steel, it'll chew up your chrome) wheel to polish, it's pretty!

Scuff or blast the chrome well, use epoxy primer, then paint away!

Chrome is tough to get paint to stick but I've had good results when sprayed over epoxy. Did my fenders this way and they look great.

I powder coated mine. After one summer of use they still look awesome!
