Now that I have a daily rider 87 venture, I am going to slow down, not be so impatient with my xj. 81 650 with 82 parts bike.I have put a stock seat on, new front tire, bought a new piston and rebuild kit for the front caliper but apparently the inner rubber seal is the wrong one, I found the sidecovers, even the RIGHT side one thanks to a tip from this forum.here is my plan. The bike is a yamaha maxim. There is a dallas dealer called maxim yamaha.I am hoping once i get this bike restored minus the buckhorns that if i ride it over there they will want a picture, maybe even ask to keep it there for display a couple days.At least let me take a picture with them in front of their dealership.Probably the coolest coffee shop in all of north texas is here in denton.Every sunday at 9 am bikes gather there for coffee. You would think its a bike show. Many bikes are vintage.Every make just about.Few harleys, they dont want to be seen with jap crap or euro trash they say. never ever has there been an xj there. I will change that. I have the stock mufflers, exhausts, crossover pipes to install. The carbs were rebuilt before i got the bike thank the lord for that. The tank is dented in on the right emblem side.I am going to find a dentpuller kit and pull that out and then get a friend to paint it in the original red metallic. I have the original luggage rack with the slidein sissybar with a mile high passenger backrest to install.A friend is going to recover that pad.Its diamond pleat and the seat is straight across pleated.

Some of the black paint has flaked off, like around the grabrail and some on the handlebar controls and caliper body. What kind of paint do i use to redo that. Can it be brushed on? If sprayed it looks like something small like an airbrush would be needed. Also the dark accents on the stock wheels.Lots of masking but if those were repainted I wonder how long it would be before they looked crummy again. I am loving this little bike project.

The correct paint information can be found in the XJ4Ever catalog. Chacal has the paint in stock.
An art brush and a bit of paint thinner is what most of us use for the detail work.
