Normally like to hear a vehicle at least turn over before I purchase :D. The seller says the starter is out and battery... been sitting about a year.

    86 Yamaha Maxim x - $750 (El paso)

Looks to be in decent cosmetic shape...

So... I've looked over starter rebuild... easy enough, looks like. Easy enough that I suspect there is more wrong with this than is immediately evident, otherwise why not fix and sell for a little more?

How should I go about assessing this? Would $500 be a reasonable offer since I can't hear it run or even turn over?

    TIA for any advice!

Cash in hand goes a long way. Make your offer, if they refuse, leave a card with contact info, and walk away. They'll see their money leaving...

Do you have any pictures we can analyze, or a link to Craigslist ad? That way, the experts can tell you what you are looking at.

It's missing the air box. Those individual filters, AKA pods, will make tuning difficult. Also missing the side cover, and I think a bunch of chrome bits are gone too. The valve cover looks odd, but I'm not an expert on the x (or anything for that matter). Is there a box of parts? These missing bits can be a bargaining chip.

Not a bad looking bike, but yes, my $$ would be that there's some other issue that a lack of the buyer being able to start the bike would prevent detection of. Hey, why not buy a cheap starter offof eBay (or a local m/c junkyard), the same starter fits all XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900 models (colors vary but who cares). And you'll need pair of jumper cables to hook up to get it to crank. Then when it won't start you can bargain the price down to a parts-bike price............

Tell him you would have to spend too much money to make it worth 750. Can’t verify the engine is any good
Deduct for missing cover, backrest, chrome bits etc....$250 is a good place to start. If he wants 750 he would be happy at 500 ... it’s not your job to make him happy.

Ask him how he came up with $750, he'll probably say a dollar a CC. Then tell him that's for a running bike not the boat anchor in the picture. You could also put it in 5th gear have the guy push you, drop the clutch and see if it coughs.

Worst case the starter clutch is bad, could be why starter was removed in first place , realize that the X is a cool bike and some what rare as far as parts go xj4ever should be able to hook you up on most things . Keep us informed if you get it or not.
