does anyone know is the 1980 XJ650(G) the only year where one or both of the side cover emblem say "MAXIM-I" (vs just "MAXIM")? 1980 and 1981 had pins in the emblems which locked onto the back of the side covers with spring washers and then in '82 they went to stick-on side cover emblems. I'm trying to figure out which stock bikes came with the "Maxim-I" emblem (Pin version) on the side cover and on which side was it - right, left, or both?.

You'd think this would be easy to figure out but it's not really - I think they kept the part number exactly the same but changed the emblem (i.e. dropped the "I")

1980 was the Maxim - I. I believe, though, the correct pronunciation is actually "Maxim - 1". ( the I is supposed to be Roman numeral 1)

Many of the cover emblems were the pin and circular clip. The Maxim650 ones were stick-on, the Midnight Maxim were pin..... I have a whole stack of covers, I could compare for you.

thanks Dave, do you have any side covers that say "MAXIM-I" ? If so I'm guessing that it says "MAXIM-I" on both the right and left side covers and the covers are off a 1980 XJ650G ? It's interesting that the part number for these side cover emblems are exactly the same for the 1981 XJ650's even though they dropped the "I" from the emblem.

The sides covers don't actually carry the same part numbers, the last two figures (which describe the color) are different, thus each side cover really has a unique part number, and since the 1980 and 1981 models never shared the same paint numbers, then those last two positions not only identifies the color, but also whether it is a 1980 or 1981 cover, and thus the number and position of the emblem mtg. holes.

1980 "MAXIM-I" emblems have 3 mtg. holes, all in a straight horizontal line.
1981 "MAXIM" emblems have 3 mtg. holes, but the center hole is offset below the end holes.

The emblem numbers also differ, the 1980 emblems are 00-00 whereas the 1981 emblems are 10-00 in the last 4 positions:

NOTE: 1980-81 650M emblems are much larger in size than the 1982-84 side cover emblems.

Well, great info but some of it was wrong! Corrected info is as follows:

1980 "MAXIM-I" and 1981 "MAXIM emblems have 2 mounting pegs per emblem in a straight horizontal line, and the pins are the same distance apart on both the 1980 and 1981 emblems.......it is the 1981 XJ650 MIDNIGHT MAXIM emblems that use 3 mounting pins per emblem.

BTW, the 1980 MAXIM-I emblems are only about 75% as tall as the 1981 MAXIM emblems (but they are both about the same horizontal width).
