I recently bought a 1982 xj550 and the stock air box it came with was barely holding on with duct tape keeping it together. When I took off the air box it came out in 2 pieces with the duct tape the only thing keeping the pressure and it together. So the stock air box is butchered and I’m wondering if I should with go with pods or if there some place I can buy a new air box?

Best thing would be the correct airbox (oh no.....here we go AGAIN)

I'm sure someone here has one, but the BIG question is:
Do you need it for a 550 Seca, or 550 Maxim?

Yeah I’ve read a lot about how hard it is to tune pods but at the moment they seemed like the only option since the air box is in 2. I need one for a xj550 maxim. If I can’t find one I might end up figuring a way to restore the air box or just go with the lengthy process of pods and rejetting.

I'm a real fan of modern epoxy glue. No one sees it anyway.

I had the same issue when I was restoring my 81 XJ750 Seca, no air box so I chose pods and have not had any issues and glad I made that decision. Bike runs great and starts up almost every time on the 1st try. It did take a little time to dial them in with the correct jets, but with no air box removing the carbs is a piece of cake. I say go with pods.

Once the carbs have been rebuilt and set up properly they don't need to be removed again for many years.

I have always thought stock is the best way to go to make life a lot easier. Also, it has always seemed to me that removing the air box removed part of the carb support system, and that adding the extra weight of the pods put a lot of stress on the intake boots. If you decide on pods I would suggest coming up with some extra support for the carbs.
