    Hi, guys.

I have a 1983 XJ900 Seca and recently i have some issues. It dies at idle. If i keep 1500 rpm and above everything is ok, but when i let the throttle it dies almost immediately. I don`t know if it`s electrical problem or something with the carbs (btw i have new carbs) or something with the starter... Oh yeah... and it`s my first motorcycle. I bought it a week ago. ;)

    I would appreciate some help.

    Thank you.

    Probably some clogged idle circuits.....

Can we assume that it also stalls when you have her in gear with the clutch in?

Does it idle once it is warmed up? Are you using the choke/enricher? It may have gotten colder recently so you may need to apply some choke to help it warm up.

If it won't idle at all then you can try adjusting the idle speed using the adjustment knob between carbs 2 and 3 on the back of the carb rack. You should be idling at 1100 rpm when warm.

If you can't get to idle at all then it could be the idle circuits like @hogfiddles says but you have 4 of them so I wouldn't expect them all to clog at the same time. More likely one or two might clog which would give you a rough idle or force you to adjust your idle to a higher RPM to keep it going.

Even one clogged one can make it shut down.

Clogged idle circuits or air screws out of whack.

I am sure that is true but I can also pull two of my spark plug leads and still keep idling.

But does yours die at idle if you let off the throttle instead of holding it at 1500rpm to keep it running?

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm saying it can idle with only 2 cylinders firing; no throttle. I figure that would be the same or worse than having one or two clogged idle circuits.

He just got his first bike and the temperature in Bulgaria just dropped to 7 degrees Celsius. Am I wrong in thinking that he should try using his choke and adjusting his idle screw before he starts pulling the carbs?

I just see exactly what he wrote. I see a 35 yr old bike that he just bought a week ago, it's doesnt run right, keeps stalling, and nothing about carb cleaning.......or shims either-----

It sounds at THIS point like since it won't idle, it may have at least one clogged idle jet.
