Does anyone know of a cleanable ( K&N style) air filter for my 82 XJ 1100?
Will one fit from something else? I hate paper filters . I contacted K&N but they said they don't make one or even pods for it. There have to be pods to fit it. I think the woman from K&N was wrong.

You ae right, they don't make one. I have looked for a long time. the next best solution is to replace the paper filter element with a washable element. Keep the old filter frame and cut out the old paper , use silicone to glue in a new filter in the old frame. This worked well on mine.

The guy I talked to @ K&N said that they use urethane ( like the stuff used for windshields ) and to make sure that the urethane soaks into some of the gauze. I kinda wanted to use pods so I would have easier access to the carbs but the air box design is kinda neat too. BTW has anyone tried to make a scoop out of the left side access cover? It looks easy to do.Jetting for same?

A scoop on the side would let hot air in, a duct from underneath could let cold ram air into the airbox, giving a bit of pressure boost at speed.
That bit of pressure will shut off your fuel flow (me thinks) because we only have about a third PSI gravity feed from the tank. The Learned Ones are against pods and air box mods because the carbs are delicately balanced. Be prepared to reverse your modifications.

Edited add-on: I ran a tube out my truck window into a water filled tube and got only 2 inches at 80 MPH which isn't enough pressure to cut off fuel flow like I thought. That's about a tenth of a PSI.

K&N Makes a drop-in filter shaped the same as the stock one for the XJ550...I know this because I have one on the shelf in my garage. Not sure about the XJ1100 though...sorry.

    Hi
I have a xj1100 and had the same problem with finding a filter. I ordered pod filters from K&N for a 1981 XS1100 they were a direct fit and in stock at a cost of $140.00. I removed the airbox installed the filters and ran the bike. No lean run or jetting problems noted.

Like Mlew said, what silicone do we use to glue the foam pad to the stock filter casing? Are such foams available in auto stores..?

I just used off the shelf black silicone from the parts store. The filter element is from a washable air filter I found in the scrap pile. It has been in service for 2 years now with no problems. I cleaned it last weekend and there are no signs of it comming apart.

The XJ1100 air filters are unique to that bike, I have not found another that will fit. K&N makes filters for lots of bikes but not the XJ1100.

I finally put double pods (1&2,3&4) for an fj1200 and they fit (sorta).
Had to modify my petcocks for them to fit.
The ones for an XS1100 would have fit perfectly.

I rejetted the primaries because of my 4-2-1 exhaust i built as well as the pods. The mains are so far un touched.

I believe my valves are too tight and I may have to rejet once I fix that.

P.S. my cobbled up ignition has worked flawlessly since it was installed.
