    My 82 XJ1100 Maxim has these plastic thingies between the fins. What are they? Are they important? I would like to remove them as some are missing but if they serve an important function i will try to replace them.

    My current theories are:
    1. They dampen vibration to make the machine quieter. OR..
    2. They support the fins to prevent breakage.

    Help me O Gurus of the XJ ( and XS ) world!

    Actually it's #1 AND #2 -- they do both.

    I'd say it's safe to remove them for cosmetic reasons, you won't hurt your engine--I;m leaving mine alone.

    The technical reason is "Noise and Vibration Dampening"

    The noise it Dampens is a inaudible High Frequency Harmonic that causes fatigue when exposed to the frequency over long periods of time.

    I added a few extra to my 750 and there is a definite lowering of noise, in general, and a major reduction of the high-freq, fatigue causing "Hum" that emits from the block that can make you get tired and cranky!

    Thanks for asking that question, I thought maybe they "fell down" and lodged in the fins ... I took them out, and was going to chuck them.
    You never know ...

    I'll take them if you are going to live without them. I'll find a use for them.

    They're actually a very hard rubber material, very small, about 1/2" x 1/4", sorta wedge-shaped, and there's two different sizes:

    yy5) OEM Yamaha rubber Cylinder Fin Rubber Insulators. These are the small, rubber, wedge-shaped noise absorders that fit between adjacent levels of the cylinder head cooling fins at various places on the heads. Usually hardened or missing from original motors. Replacing these insulators with new ones really helps to quite down an engine, and especially eliminates the fin "ringing", while giving your engine that "factory" appearance.

    HCP1280RH OEM cylinder fin Rubber Insulator, for the RH side of engine. Differs between models, but normally use 8-10 per engine on the right side. Fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900 models. Each:
    $ 2.50

    HCP1280RHSET10 OEM cylinder fin Rubber Insulators, for the RH side of engine. Set of 10:
    $ 21.00

    HCP1280LH OEM cylinder fin Rubber Insulator, for the LH side of engine. Differs between models, but normally use 15 per engine on the left side. Fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900 models. Each:
    $ 2.00

    HCP1280LHSET10 OEM cylinder fin Rubber Insulators, for the LH side of engine. Set of 15:
    $ 27.00
