I pose this question to the learned ones:
What do you think about a 4-2-1-2 exhaust using the stock mufflers?

Another sceme I was thinking fo is 4 into 2 but connect the center cylinders together and the outer cylinders together.

The way it is stock 1&2 are together and 3&4 are together with an "h" pipe between.

Thus looks very restrictive to me.

If I do either of these do you think I will have to re-jet?
I'm trying to stay on a very low budget.
I can modify the exhaust for almost free but a $120.00 jet kit is out of the question.

I also want to make a cleanable filter ( K&N style) using the stoch air box.

I'm trying to achieve maximum fuel economy by removing air flow restrictions and maximizing the low to midrange torque.

Any and all comments would be appreciated.

    Thanx

If you do anything at all that changes the exhaust back pressure and restriction you will have to re-jet. Also, you can't get maximum fuel economy by removing air flow restrictions. That may give you more power at higher RPMs if you re-jet properly but for more economy you need more restriction, not less and you also need to run the engine at lower RPMs.

I'm pretty much as beginner as they get but, i'm in need of a newmuffler, at least the end piece on the right side of the bike. If i were to order a replacement from, for example:
(http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Prod ... 58/c-10111), could i expect it to fit onto the stock mount or would modifications be necessary?

first bike 85' maxim x 750, in need of some tlc.
any help would be much appreciated, i can see that i'v found the jackpot, i can see myself learning a lot around here.

I have the 24 inch megaphone version on my Maxim X and it works fine with no rejetting.

They seem to be well made, are easy to fit and are inexpensive

I have some rust spots that are letting exhaust leak out on the right side, and pour out of the left side, so I am needing to learn a temp fix (as I'm still riding everyday) or need to try to find the same original ones. I love their look and sound, so it's just the matter of taking the time and paying the piper to replace with same.

iv seen some mods with pipes that look alot longer than the stock mufflers. is the 24" megaphone much longer than the stock? thats not what i'm looking for, i don't like the look of the longer mufflers. or is the 12" shorty closer to the original size?

I think the 24 is closer to OEM, the 12" is the shorty

If you alter the Exhaust for Free-flow and subsequently alter the Carbs for "Less restriction" ... you are definitely going to need that Jet Kit you don't want to buy.

The Carbs are Factory Tuned to a set Cubic Feet per Minute Value shared by the four Carbs after the Intake Air passes through the Airbox Intake and Air Filter.

That's why those who have done such Mods found it necessary to Re-Jet for the Increased amount of air being drawn-in making the Mixture Lean.

You'll need hotter Jets to Enrich the Air~Fuel Mixture ... guaranteed!
