    Hello everybody,

I'm new here thanks in advance for any help I might get. Also I don't have much experience working on bikes, so if some of my nomenclature or part or anything seems weird let me know. I have an xj550 Maxim where the return on my clutch is working. As in, I pull the clutch lever, it comes in, but when I release is does not move back out. So, on the outside of the bike but where the clutch cable ends there is a spring that connects onto the body of the bike and resists then pulling of the handlebar. This spring is broken. My questions are firstly what is this spring called. My second question is whether that outer spring the only mechanical piece that pushes the clutch out or will I need to open things up and look inside? Is that spring the main mover or is it extra support to something happening on the inside. Thanks for any help,

    Joe

this is the part you need but the part schematic is deceptive
it is not drawn well and is wrong location
    SPRING, TORSION
    90508-16459-00

    cost about 5$ at dealership

    read this
    CLUTCHES 101-Part 1: the 400/550/600s with pics

    it has a corrected diagram

the spring helps but it is the internal workings that move the lever back

the pull rod and internal sprangs are also part of the movement

Thanks for the help, I figured there had to more going on than just that outer spring. So is it probably the internal springs that are defective? Or is it impossible to tell what I will need without breaking it open to look. I don't have a good workspace at all, so it helps to know what to order before working if that is possible. Ive been looking at some videos of replacing the springs and it seems like something I can do.

From a professional/ tradesman's perspective (I used fo fix machinery for a living) you should never order parts before you know exactly which parts you need (unless you can afford to stock parts for a later date should you not need them for a particular job).
Drain the oil, pull the clutch cover off, and inspect.

Having said that; it would not be unwise to order a full clutch kit and make everything new.

Not always necessary to drain the oil BTW (which would be annoying if you only just changed it)- with the bike on its sides-tand you might only lose a cupful or less when you can the clutch cover off. lean it further and maybe no loss.

Thanks for the help, it needs an oil change anyway so that not a big deal. I ordered a full kit and will let you guys know how it comes out.

Dear lord, please you use locktite on your clutch bolts. I made the mistake of not doing so and my transmission exploded inside of the bike. Replacing the friction plates is not an easy task for a beginner. Make sure you take your time, it is a pain to seal and find you did something wrong and have to take everything apart again. I Can't emphasize this enough. LOCKTITE

If you do, only use blue (NOT RED) or you'll hate life when you need to replace the pack again.
