you could rotate motor several times by hand to get the oil pumping through the motor

if you do this with the valve cover off you will see the flow into the cam shim area.

when you get it running for a few minites stop and check the oil level

Sorry, an 82 xj 750j max. I preloaded the valve area with fresh oil. I figured that doing it by hand was the first step, i was wondering if i should do this with the spark plugs in or out? Will oil pump correctly with the plugs out?

Assembly lube is ideal for dry restarts on all bearing surfaces. I would be concerned that all of the aluminum journals will be dry and cause galling. Is that not a concern on these bike engines?

    Anytime I start a motor after I pull a head I generally:

    - Spin slowly by hand with plugs out. Check for correct cam timing.
    - Spin with starter, plugs out and valve cover off until I get oil up top. Cans are usually installed with red assembly lube.
    - Start up as normal.
    - Tune, let cool, re torque head.

If you used assembly lube then just prime the carbs and start the engine.

Good question, I'll be reseating the rings on my 550 after cleaning and de-glazing the liners.

How many miles are on the engine? Any reason you decided to spend on new rings? I am going to re-use the rings in mine, 18k miles and the bores looked good. I haven't measured the bore taper yet, though. It fired OK and there are no signs of blow-by so I'm not dumping the value of the bike into a set of rings just yet.

Kinda like asking ten people how to use a cast iron pan, you'll probably get twelve answers.

I don't have any XJ specific experience but this Wiseco page has a detailed procedure halfway down the page:

Let me brake it down. I bought my 82 xj 750j max fall of 2016 i didn't get to ride it much. summer of 17 i got to ride a lot it felt great to get back to riding. in my mine it was a great running bike Spring of 18 i bought a 83 xj 750 midnight max with 35k the difference was night and day, pun intended. The midnight had no vibration, the only thing i felt was the bumps in the road. The 750 j i had a lot of engine vibration so i removed the engine replaced all of the motor mounts. I then decided to powder coat the jug section of the engine so i had to take the head apart... well you know the rest.

Let her idle until warm, then ride the piss out of her.

Just avoid running at a constant speed for a while. No 30 minute trips at a steady speed until you have a few hundered miles on the rings.

Did your 750 have rubber mounts? My only grip is the buzz in my butt at 65-70mph. Otherwise the 750 is pretty smooth for not being rubber mounted.

The Maxim 750 engine is rubber mounted.

The "butt-buzz" can be tamed with a running synch of the carbs.

All 6 rubber mounts have been replaced. Running synch was damn near spot on. It wasn't just butt buzz,... handle bars, & foot buzz. It just didn't ride like my midnight. I will let you all know if it repaired the problem. Thanks for all the help.
