    hey guys,

I have a 1982 maxim 650 from North America so I purchased a rebuilt carb kit for the hitachi hsc32 carbs. I received it in the mail and there are a few parts I don’t recognize. Can someone tell me where these go? or did I purchase the wrong kit? Thanks

Attached a picture of my carbs aswell.

if you do not recognize the MIXTURE screw you did not remove yours from the carbs . you have more cleaning to do. do you also have a spring flat washer and little tiny o ring?

drain screw for carb bowls if yours are good reuse them but you still need to make sure you can remove them from bowls and do a little more cleaning

And don't forget to use anti-seize paste on the bowl drain screws when installing!

Or medium strenght locktite, which will prevent corrosion and make sure the screws don't come out until you want them to.

Thanks for the replies guys, still learning my way around these carbs.

Turns out the float bowl drain screws are completely stripped and stuck. Spent about an hour with extractors trying to get them out today.

I also have a question about the float needles, the new ones that came in the kit don’t have a top ring to attach the wire to, did they send me the wrong float needles or am I missing something? Attached a picture of the new and old ones.

Not all of the replacement ones come with grooves for the clips. What brand?
There is at least one that people have had trouble with.

Wow that seems really annoying, do you know if there is a way to make it work? They are unbranded, just part of the rebuild kit I got. Everything else seems to fit perfectly.

If they drop back from the closed position smoothly then you canuse them. Otherwise order from @chacal

Perhaps im misunderstanding how they work. But if the clip cant be attached to them then wont they not move up and down with the float? sorry for the dumb questions.

Edit: Just read up on this. I'll give it a shot without clips and see how it goes, hopefully other members have had luck with this in the past.

Gravity. The clips just help a bit.
The only dumb question is the question that goes unasked.

Ref float needles - the 'taper' on the new one looks a lot different to the old. I'd check they seal before installing on bike.

NOTE2: all of the float needles that have a rubber tip also use a retaining clip to secure the needle to the float arm. Please note that the clip can be installed in two different ways (orientations). User experience indicates that the clip should be positioned so that the "open" area of the clip (that part of the clip that snaps over the ridge on the top of the needle) should be oriented towards the "back" of the carbs; in other words, the open area of the clip should be towards the airbox.

By the way, the purpose of this clip is to prevent the rubber tip of the needle from "seizing" within the float valve seat (due to the rubber swelling), or fuel varnish forming around it (and "gluing" it to the brass seat). Since the clip is attached to the float, as the fuel bowl empties the weight of the float pulling down on the needle will tend to overcome any needle tip seizure and prevent that float valve from remaining closed, even as the float bowl empties of fuel.

Metal-tipped needles, although not original on Hitachi carbs, were used on many original Mikuni carbs. The metal needle tips are much less prone to tip seizure and thus metal-tipped needles do not need, nor use (or even accept) the needle retaining clip.
