My 82 XJ650J has an instrument cluster from a Midnight Maxim. None of the data in the Haynes manual tells how to remove the top cover from this cluster. There are no screws to remove as shown in the Haynes manual on page 255. My best guess at this point is that the cover just snaps on but I don't know where the retention points are. I don't want to break the cover. I can see the two screws that hold the tach to the lower cover so I can get the tach out once I get the top cover off. Anyone have any ideas? I'd kinda like to get the tach out to see why it is inop. Gives me something to do while its cold out.

    Thanks,

    Phil

usually the screws are on the back of the cluster and then it just pops apart.

Yeah, thats what the Haynes book shows, but there are no screws like that on this cluster. The only two screws on the back of this one are the two that hold the tach to the lower cluster and the two that hold the speedo to the lower cluster.

Strange, I don't want to start prying around and break something but there has to be a way to get the top cover off. I know, dynamite!!!!!!!!!! :)>)

If I recall, you have to remove the lower instrument surround Housing (should be a total of 4 screws) and then with this lower housing off, there are two screws through each meter case "ears" that goes into the lense cover..........

I believe chacal is correct. The cluster disassembles from the back. Remove the 4 screws and the housing will pull off. You will find the instruments screwed to the face of the cluster.

Ok, that makes sense now. Thats not the way they are showing it in the book. Too stinking cold out right now to tackle it though. Supposed to be warmer Christmas day, if it is I'll rip it apart then. Have to get my parts order ready for Len also, good job for a nasty night like this.

    Cheers,

    Phil
