    I've never thought lane splitting was a good idea, though I had a co-worker in CA who did it all the time. Relying on cars to move over in their lane seems like asking for trouble. Drivers stying in their lane is enough to worry about!

    Lane splitting is very safe, and reduces traffic congestion. The problem comes (like all traffic related problems) when one party or another either does not know, or chooses to not follow, the rules.

    If the car was on autopilot does it really need the mirror? Just curious...

    We can only speculate what happened before.

    DOT says yes. There are cameras in the mirrors to provide data for the autopilot.
