JBM replacements work well and cost a whole lot less than other options.

Or the piston itself has been bent

Agreed. If everything that attach to the slide is good the slide is defective.

I gave it one last try and went back to polish the piston and bore real well. This time all pistons passed the clunk test, once I installed spring and carb hats they all came down at the same speed and no real hesitation other than the vacuum resistance, moving on to the next step... Getting the floats wet set. Not looking forward to what seems a messy process.

    Moving on!

I went out there and checked valve clearances... no wonder why the PO said it would run really rough until it didn't run. Here is what I found:

    Exhaust clearances: 0.08 - 0.12 - 0.08 - 0.09
    Intake clearances: 0.15 - <0.04 - 0.13 - <0.04

It got dark on me (driveway shop) so tomorrow I will have to go out and get shim numbers and swap/hit hogfiddles for a swap.

    I will keep you posted.

Well that'll do it. Sometimes I wish that either hydraulic valve lifters had never been invented, or that they were better suited to high RPM applications.
    The things people ignore...

And... Once I was almost ready to get back to working on these projects we found out that we are expecting our second child.. yay!!! The bikes are going to have to wait a few more years to get done... maybe by the time they go to college I will have time for the wrenching hobby.

I have three bikes and only 1.5 kids. I am not brave enough to hoard more kids without more room (for the bikes).

I grew up in a 860 sq ft house. Two parents, two kids, a cat and a dog, and mom said there was plenty of room for more people (she grew up with 8 siblings in a 1,000 sq ft home). There is always room :)

Congrats! Going from 2 to 3 kids is a lot easier than 1 to 2!
