I synched that carbs yesterday and played around with the tune a bit. I got it idling better than it has been, but occasionally there will be a popping through the exhaust. Is this due to being a bit lean?

that could be caused by a few diffrent things
are all enrichment valves closing all the way?
is it still too soon to have done a plug check?
more than likely you may be lean in one of the cylinders, you do say that you have done a recent tune up?
play with any of the mixture screws?

They never do backfire when accelerating, it's DECELERATING that's when they pop. You probably need to increase the pilot jets one size or just learn to live with the popping and you'll save gas.

Someone also told me that small holes in the headers or collector box can cause some backfiring
