    Hey guys,

Just purchased my first bike last week and was glad to see there's a forum dedicated to these. I've always worked on my own cars but I'm completely new to bikes so it's good to have resources like this.

Picked up an 82 XJ650 with only 4000k miles, garage kept, and only 2 owners; I think I stole it for $1k! Other than needing to clean the carbs, the only problem, as far as I know, is a cracked manifold boot. Fingers crossed.

    Cheers

It will not take too many kegs of beer to get the bike ready to ride. Welcome to the forum.

Total steal for a g note.
Carb clean and new battery that’s a $2500 bike here all day.
Cracks in the boots don’t go all the way through. Mose likely that cracks on the mounting face to the head are cracked and RTV will fix that if it’s sucking air somewhere.

    Much appreciated, guys

I pulled the carbs and cleaned them up although they were hardly dirty. Had some fuel leaking into the intake so I was hoping the float needle needed some attention; didn't look like it did. Hopefully I won't need to put new ones in but I'll throw it back on today and find out. As for the boot, RTV is precisely what I did and I think it'll hold well.

As for homebrewing, been doing it for years. Think it's time for another batch now that I think about it. Nothing like a tasty brew while working on the bike.

When you took the carbs off and cleaned them, did you get carb spray through this hole? A "bred" tie will fit down in that little hole well. Just want to make sure sense you have the carb rack off to check it well.

I have that bike, but the red on mine isn't original. Can't believe you got one with all the bits and pieces, like thw seat lock anf yamaha name plate on the forks.

+ for homebrewing. There's quite a few of us here. I even grew hops this year.

Wow! Great looking bike. I just moved here to Lawrence KS few months ago. If you need any help let me know. When it warms up go for a ride.
