i HAVE A 1981 SECA 750, THAT HAS AN 18 INCH REAR WHEEL. i WAS WONDERING IF A 16 INCH WHEEL WOULD FIT MY BIKE BECAUSE I WANT TO GET THE BACK END LOW AND GIVE MY BIKE THAT OLD SCHOOL BOBBER LOOK.

I would try some shorter shocks first... I like larger diameter wheels personally. Maybe try a lower profile tire as well?

Welcome Slave! I'm glad you found us...
What is the donor 16" coming off of? If it is another 80-84 Maxim, you should be ok but your speedo will need to be recalibrated should you want it to work correctly. Scoring the speedo off of the donor might be a good idea to avoid this issue.
A favor if you could, could you please turn off the Caps Lock? Sounds like your yelling at us. While I am a little hard of hearing, I can still read 10 font just fine.
    Thanks in advance.
Once again, glad to have you aboard!

Does the Seca take it's speedo drive from the rear wheel? If it doesn't, then I don't think changing the rear wheel will affect the speedo reading.

Don't forget about the rear Wheel being married to the Final Drive. What Shaft Drive Bike of Yamaha's has a 16-Inch Diameter Rear Wheel that you are considering swapping-out for your rear wheel?

    A 16 from a Virago will work.

Just remember that you are dropping the final drive ratio, so expect higher RPM's at all speeds.

All I know is 81 XJ650 is what it says on the ad-- the speedo is driven from the front wheel, I already have aftermarket white face gauges to install, a round head light of a n XS bike, a set of filter pods and just arrived yesterday a super cheap maxim tank (needs TLC). I do need to find a way to convert to mechanical tach. I am gald to find this site so people actually understand what I am talking about

You are correct, it does not take the speedo drive off of the back wheel. The donor speedo does however contain the correct gears to match up the change in wheel diameter, which would throw off the stock speedo.
Good eye Goat. (Happy New Year to you amigo)

do you think if I got a donor speedo the gears would work in an aftermarket speedo?

I hightly doubt it. Best to use what the manufacturer of the speedo suggests/installs. Of course there are folks out there with access to machines and such that make their own gears to the ratios and arrangements that they want. Most good speedo rebuilding shops can help with this.

    Yes 7DAYSLAVE,
You can swap that back wheel from a 750 Seca for one from a 650 Maxim. The gear final drive fits perfect and it will lower the bike noticably.
Here's my 750 Seca with a 16" Maxim wheel on the rear:

I saw another bike on here with a 16 and hard tailed it looked sweet but I saw the guy on the bike and it looked like he was on a rebel. I am 6' 250 lbs so I still need it to look and fit well. I am thinking of keeping the 18 now for this reason. any thoughts?
