Hi all. One of the guys at our Honda V4 website recently posted this. Since us Maxim/Seca fans would probably be very interested in this as well, I've taken the liberty of re-posting it here:

I found a post talking about a new magazine coming out covering bikes from the 60's, 70's and 80's to be called Classic Motorcyclist on the GS board. I emailed the editor, Mitch Boehm, expressing my interest and the possible interest from you guys. He sounds really excited about me posting this here. Sales of the first issues will determine the future of the magazine. It is being backed by Motorcyclist magazine so you know it will be a quality publication.

Mr. Boehm sounds like this will be real readers magazine and even will have a way for readers to make suggestions for future articles. He is a true rider of classic bikes and realizes that people our age are wanting to get more information on the bikes of the 60's through the 80's that we grew up tearing up. He is going to have articles about the bikes, riders, rides and events. Here is is a quote from his email to me in response to my comment about our bikes, "Yep, we'll do Honda V-4s...they're plenty classic!"

This is the final draft of the cover so take a look and get your wallets ready. This magazine is going to be on a trial basis so there's no subscriptions available right now. The first issue will come out in April/May and will be available only at newsstands and stores like Barnes and Noble.

He said that the more people that hear about it the better the future will be for the magazine. Feel free to post it on any motorcycle board that you frequent.

Edit: It is not the actual cover of the first issue but a comp., the first issue will feature a '69 CB750 and an H1 Kawasaki

    HMMMMMMMMMM.

Sorry you feel that way. I happen to think it's cool that there may be a magazine targeting people like me who appreciate this generation of bikes. I'm pretty certain there aren't enough fans of any one brand or model to support an actual magazine. This is likely as close as we can get. Sorry you apparently don't share my enthusiasm.

I realize that the magazine is focused on vintage bikes in general, but you completely missed my point.

You: "Hey, cool idea for a magazine. Thinking about doing anything with those inline-four Yamahas?"

Him: "Yep, we'll do Honda V-4s... they're plenty classic!"

Tim, I'm sure the concept of older bikes is sound. Let's see how this pans out before we shoot it.
(Chanukah ham... how could they miss?)

Hopefully this isn't being interpereted as a shot or a jab at the vintage Yamahas...that was never my intention. It may also be helpful to note that all but the first paragraph of the first post was taken (with permission) from another poster on another board (not me). I'm simply passing on something I stumbled on to at another board and felt it would be of interest in spite of the references to Hondas. 8O
The 80s in particular were a period of very rapid technological advancement by all of the Japanese makers, and the XJ Yahahas were very much in that race. I happen to be more familiar with my 2 bikes, but I would enjoy reading and learning about Kawasakis and Suzukis or others of this period as well. I had no intention of starting a Chevy/Ford argument with this post. Mr Boehm's comment about the V4s shouldn't be interpereted as a slam against the Yahahas at this site and I would imagine that if he was contacted about it he would be very receptive to adding the XJs to a list if bikes worthy of some magazine space.
The Ham for Chanukah pic WAS good. Still not sure it applies here though...
Guess I'll delete all Honda references in future postings. :p

    Cheers

    Tim

I look forward to seeing the magazine. If you hear when it hits the stores I'd like to know.

In the meantime, I'd really like to get my hands on some of that Chanukah ham.

That ham gonna be "Flame" broiled?

I hope they at least sell enough magazines to stay afloat for a few years. All the bike rags on the stand today are all about crotch rockets and choppers on steroids, nothing about vintage imports. I'll buy it when it comes out, and I'll pass the word along as I can.

Tim, this sounds an awful lot like a magazine which I already subscribe to; "Motorcycle Classics"......what, if anything would be different about the new mag?

Ahhhh. Gotcha. That part was less than clear, although a bit more obvious when you point it out.

Let's see, which pic can I come up with for my lack of reading comprehension...

There is a column in the Feb. `08 issue of Motorcyclist talking about the new magazine. They are asking for input on what you want to see in the new mag. E-mail them at classicmail@sourceinterlink.com

Sounds like they're just copying an already existing magazine from the UK that does an amazing job of covering vintage Japanese bikes. It's called Classic Motorcycle Mechanics and has extensive photo/text breakdowns of classic Japanese bike restoration - among many other features. But I guess it WON'T have one essential ingredient that Motorcyclist Magazine ALREADY has and no doubt Mitch Boehm's Classic Motorcyclist WILL have. Tons of Full page ads for overpriced crap. The UK Classic Motorcycle Mechanics is a serious enthusiast mag with very few ads. It's mostly paid for by subscriptions, which tellsyou a lot. It's not some ad vehicle for a faceless media conglom. The editor of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics is Rod Gibson, someone who spent many years as a real mechanic in real shops and ran a real restoration business. I wonder if Boehm can say as much. Sorry, but I just don't buy his act. "The Butcher"? Spare me.
I'm willing to see what they come up with but if it's anything like their current ad-stuffed mag, I'll take a pass. I have better ways to waste money.

The July/August Issue of Motocycle Classics Magazine has a six page article comparing the Yamaha XJ650LJ Turbo Seca and the Kawasaki ZX750E1 Turbo.
Nice colour pictures and an interesting read.

The "Under The Radar " section has a short piece on the Yamaha XJ650RJ
as a contender to the Honda CB700SC as a classic of tomorrow.
A smaller picture of a red Seca like mine, but with the small fairing.
I hope it makes the resale value of my bike go up :)
