For no apparent reason the tail light has stopped working when the lights are turned on, the brake lights are ok. If ignition is switched to park the tail light works. All fuses are good including the 5A in the headlight bucket. The non working tail light is the only problem. I suppose this has been covered before so if someone could provide a link to it or help would be much appreciated.

If the taillight works in Park but not in Run I would pull the key switch and take it apart to cleanup the contacts etc. Really not much else to fail in that scenario.

Thanks jayrodoh, I was hoping for something simpler but had almost come to that conclusion. Electrickery is not my strong point. The key switch was fully cleaned when I resto'd it about 8 years ago with no problems since and the bike has always been garaged.
And I've never been a pizza fan .. maybe a coffee and a beer :)

Do the Australian bikes have a headlight switch? I have no idea if that was even an option on that bike or what the regulations are in other countries but if it has one and it turns both the headlight and taillight off like some older bikes, that could be a failure point as well.

    At the same time?

A headlight / tail light on off, on the right switch block. I checked and cleaned the contacts, I wouldn't say they were dirty but did them anyway and now have tail light when it should. But I'm not convinced that was the problem, it may have been a connector in the harness as I pulled apart and checked the relevant ones which were all clean and tight. Will just have to keep an eye on it.

Coffee first, didn't bother with the celebratory beer when fixed.

sometimes unplugging and plugging back in is all the connector needs to clean it
