That’s a very smart thing to do; as I am sure that you will soon become aware, a great many posts on this technical chat are of running issues; and majority of running problems stem from the carburetors. I was one of those people who had to re build my carb rack 3 times and “clean” 5 times before I finally got my bike to start and even run on its own without my fiddling with it a bunch. It pays to do the homework first before the tinkering with these carburetors.

My pops always told me to do the job properly the 1st time through so I appreciated those links and what they were saying. I just bought this xj and it’s been sitting in a garage for 20plus years. I bought it from a mechanic and he had it running. But I’ve been having idle problems and I did an oil change. Found gas in the oil while I drained it. So I’m guessing it’s carbs. 0054DEB1-2794-4D89-B1B0-C3B8E8481FA0.jpeg

It’s funny you say that about your pops. My pops also told me something when I was much younger; “ if something is worth doing, then it is worth doing right. If your going to do it right then that means you do it the right way the first time” I thought back to that after my last rebuild of my entire carb rack and that’s when I fully believe that I got every single port cleaned and when I re installed the carbs the bike fired up right away and ran like a champ all on its own.

My father was a farmer, he never had enough money to do anything properly and bodged his way through life - taught me everything I know.

And, unless your petcock was left on PRI, you have an issue there, too
