Okay, check the archives, and of course confused the heck out of myself.....

Tonight, I had a few instances of my 82 750 not being able to shift past neutral, normally it was from a dead stop (light/stop sign). I was somehow able to get it to work both times.

When I got her home, I later checked and had the same problem, only this time, while on the center stand, if it wouldn't shift, I could rotate the rear wheel, and after a click she would shift.

any suggestions as to what the heck is wrong. I suppose I could use a new cable or adjustment, but when I did the check at home, the engine was turned off.

I do get a slight jump sometimes if I go from neutral to 1st, but other than that she's be shifting fine.

Bike also has almost 71K on it, Rick, I know, I know.... replace cam chain if hasnt been done yet (not sure it has)

any help would be appreciated, would like to know if it's going to be expensive to fix before I replace my rear tire.... incase it's not worth the cost of fixing.

I'm not sure what you mean by it won't shift past neutral? Does this mean you are rolling in 1st and you can't get to 2nd? More description please.

Mine jumps a bit putting it into 1st when it's cold. That thick oil will transmit some torque through the clutch even when it's disengaged. With no load on it it goes ahead and spins up so you get a bit of a jump. As it warms up this should be minimal.

You really can't evaluate the shifting without something turning. If the gear dogs aren't lined up the gear won't engage. Having the engine turning or turning the back wheel gets some relative motion going so they will drop in.

I was moving when I had the problem of it not shifting, In talking to the PO, he told me to check the clutch cable and adjust it, I am also going to take off the side cover (have to replace the gasket any way) and take a look, if the springs are bad, it'll run me about 20 bucks for the new ones. I guess tomarrow, I should hopefully know more about what the issue is (I hope)

Slight chance your starter chain guide has dropped pieces into the tranny. Best be pulling the alternator and taking a peek.

Was decient temps, ridden in colder and never had a problem. It happened to day, I didn't get down to 1st before I stopped, and when I took off, she would not shift into 2nd, I stopped and then took off again, with no problems shifting. I had to work yesterday, so I didn't get the chance to take the cover off, at take a look, would having pieces fall in the tranny cause this problem only when I'm stopping in a higher gear?, other than that, the bike rides and shifts fine.

Okay think I found the problem, I ended up finding a 1 inch chunk of the starter chain guide in the little opening you guys said to check, removed it, hope it fixes the problem

Consider that chunk advanced notice. Start saving for a new guide and a gasket kit.

Seems like you might have this prob figured out, but I have a question!
ALWAYS in 1st when coming to a stop.

Maybe not a question, but a HUGE safety procedure to say the least.
Never know when you have to up and go.
Imagine a PETERBUILT crusin your way, thats the picture I imagine.
