As I'm putting my engine back together from a starter clutch repair I was wondering about where I should put assembly lube. I know I'm gonna put some on the main crank journals and the main bearings, but should I put some on the starter clutch components I replaced, transmission gears, bearings, starter chain guide? Or just coat them with regular motor oil?

I just put oil on anything that moves. Had no problems.

Assembly lubes are primarily for plain bearings. After assembly add oil and turn the engine around a few times with power direct to starter motor to prime the oil pump and your good to go. And that way you know starter clutch was installed correctly. I have seen starter clutches installed backwards.

Check my video below to see where I use assembly lube. Clutch plates should be soaked in engine oil and one place you don't want assembly lube is in the bores. Otherwise, its all good

The factory manual says: "the (oil) filter must be filled with the specified amount of oil (0.3 qt) to prime the oil pump of an overhauled engine"

How do you install a starter clutch backwards?

If the holder of the springs and rollers is flipped around it grabs in the wrong direction. Item 6

I'm not sure that's even possible in an XJ because of how everything fits together and the orientation of the countersinks on the screw holes.

It is not possible on the XJ and most other bikes starter clutches are outside the crankcases.
