It's a breather. Lets air in/out to equalize pressure while keeping dirt and water out.

    It's important.

As MiCarl said - you definitely want that there to keep crud out of the final drive assembly - fix or find a replacement ASAP

I would hope you don't ride it without the axle in place, it looks to be missing. If the vent cap has been missing for a while it would be good to change the oil in the drive.

That should be covered with a Bell-shaped Cover that fits snuggly over the top.
    Thats your Final Drive breather.
Of bigger concern is the missing Rear Axle!

You DO have a Rear Axle for that Bike ... right???

I've never figured out how one of those breathers is attached to the drive housing....are there threads in that hole? Or is it a press-fit?

Good eye there, Rick. I missed it on the first pass. Had to scroll back up to see what you were talking about.

He has to have a Rear Axle. I doubt the Rear Wheel could make very many revolutions, under load, and stay attached to the Drive Unit.

But, let's call it ... because stranger things have happened!

After all these years ... you got the first missing-the-top-of-the-breather I have ever seen.

I don't know if that is a part you can replace.
You might have to machine a cover ... drill through the whole two pieces and put a long machine screw through there and nut-it-up!

This part is about 6 to 7 dollars from a dealer. I just bought one the other day. It is a press in fit. Not hard to get out and tap the new one in. Good luck.

I be running to the Dealer for any part the Dealer has for these bikes under 20-Bucks.

    Make that 50-Bucks!

I have supplemented my stable with a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo. Everything for this car is right up-there with Oxygen-needed at the parts window.

The Turn Signal Stalk and Hi-Lo Beam Switch was $479.00

    (Yikes? That's what I said!)

I buy a lot of parts from my local dealer and they take good care of me. He actually let me have the part for his cost since it had been there a long time. A little over 5 dollars. Sounds like these other dealers need to be run out of business. My dealer always shows me the suggested retail on the Yamaha computer. Don't let those guys hose you.
