I am in the midst of a restoration of a 1982 XJ650J. I am currently working on the starter motor. I have disassembled everything and am down to the 3 external parts by themselves. I am ready to start the process of sandblasting them and then powder coating them.

My question is about the magnets inside the center portion. I am nervous that the magnets will separate during the curing process. I know these are held in by something, but not sure what. I have seen a few videos of people who have had this powder-coated, so I'm guessing it's safe, but wanted to get another opinion.

This is a very hard question to answer.
Obviously the permanent magnets are glued into the internal cylinder of the starter motor.
    So...
From what i've seen, since i've refurbed a few and just plain old painted the exterior, will the magnets become detached and move around.
My sincere answer is, do it and find out.
    Or
    Just paint it.

    Sorry for basically not helping.

I wonder how Yamaha fixed the magnets in place, would they have used some kind of epoxy?

I would try it. It’s not an expensive or hard to find part of it falls apart.

My thinking is inline with everybody's opinions. Even if the magnets fall out during curing, I should be able to reattach anyway, no? I know the magnets are keyed inside the shell, so its not like you can place them in the wrong spot.

If you are restoring it then you won't be powdercoating anything.
It was all enamel paint from the factory.

As for the magnets, Even if they don't come unstuck from the case they will demagnitize from the heat.

So I'm not really restoring, more like repairing and cleaning it up. Ill probably just PC ends and spray middle. That sounds like a good alternative and the safest bet. Tganks everybody
