I recently fixed the clutch rattle on my 1997 Yamaha XJ 600 SECA 2. I noticed when I had it apart that the clutch friction disc had some play in them they can move about a 1/4 inch side to side. Is this correct or should they be tight with no side to side movement?

    Thx

You mean rotational movement? Like the fingers on the friction disk aren't tight in the slots in the basket? (very little movement is expected there, if any)

I put it back together already but it still has a slight clunk upon shutoff. I ordered another gasket and im going to take another look at it soon. Im currently working on making a steering stabilizer. I also have a parts bike that im going to take apart and see what it looks like compared to my main bike.

Yes exactly I think theres to much movement in them. WHat could happen if they rattle around like that. COuld it cause damage?

if the plates are moving left and right on the on the axis you may have the wrong plates or the basket set up is not original or very worn. compare the plates to the ones you removed

I would think that your clutch may grenade at some point.

compare baskets on parts bike maybe swap it out

i see you say side to side
