I am not sure what oil to use in my forks.

    I am a lightweight at 160lbs.
Have 100+ degree summers, and goes into the 70's during the colder months.
I have heard 20w fork oil

Does it have to be "fork oil"?
    Are multi grades better?

Rebuilding some shot forks now and cant wait to get back on the road.
Decisions like this will slow me down.
    Thanks for the feedback!

It does not have to be "fork oil" as Yama indicated motor oil when these were new. Suggest a single weight oil as the Multi grades would Never get hot enough (inside of Moto forks) to activate the thickness inducing additives.
So If you can find 20 w motor oil go for it otherwise just buy Fork oil.

I happened to pick us some oil. It is:
    Gold Band SAE 20
    Non-Detergent Motor Oil

It meets API Service Requirments "SA" only

I am going to give this a run, unless someone has an objection.

Got it at NAPA for a buck and a quarter 1qt

Looking at doing the same thing shortly has any one else got anything to add.
I have been told to use auto transmission fluid from some old school guys I work with so the more info available the better.
Ass.Fault I am about the same weight as you so let us know how you get on with the motor oil.
    Thanks
    Glenn

You know - for your use and specs - I'd say you should've gone for 10wt fork oil - 20 might be a little thick considering your light load, and warm temps.

Let us know how it rides there AF

Well I have had the "Sexy Seca" back on the road last night...for a little test run ;)

Having forks w/ oil PERIOD was nice.

I have air assisted forks, but have none in there for the test run.
Ride went smooth, alot more feedback. I dont think the 20wt was too heavy.
Glenn, not sure the characteristics of ATF but if the weight is ~20wt then go for it. Keep in mind that other bikes forks may use some crazy wts. Like some of the sport bikes use a 5wt w/ nitrogen compressed???
    Who knows...
    I give the 20wt a thumbs up!!
