MPG - what's everyone getting?

Hi everyone,
Just got through my first tank of gas riding my new to me 82 xj650 maxim.
getting 40.84 mpg (5.76liters/100km for my fellow Canadians) on some "spirited" in town riding. 87 octane gas.
I'm wondering how that compares to what other folks are getting. I got onto this trying to figure out how far I can go before I hit my reserve.

Not sure about fathers 550 maxim, but my cbr900rr stroker motor gets about 24 or less

Average 6 liters/100km on my 700X.

 

consistent 55mpg on 82 maxim 550

 

Damn that's good. What's your secret? Because I don't want to believe it's the extra 30 lbs I'm hauling around...

I think I am hauling 30 extra lbs too. 230lbs. Lol. Mostly local cruising. Not much highway miles. 135-140 miles from full to reserve which is 2.5 gallons

 

I really need to re-check mine since the move. I was getting 45-50 MPG on the High plains when there wasn't a headwind (lol, like that ever hpppened). The worst I saw was 38 MPG with a 20 MPH headwind on flat ground (everywhere out there is flat. Don't let the locals fool you).

 

Hey Btroppma, I have the same ride. I average about 43 for all purpose riding. Prob 46 on a good low-wind highway ride (rare in this area (CO) as k-moe mentioned).

When I first got her in good shape (decade ago), it was near 50 but once I improved the tuning so she had the performance that I expected, dropped to the current mpg.

I think 41 is low. Could be running rich, or plenty of other causes.

 

i go 125 miles and start thinking about gas, never hit reserve and never think about it more than that

 

my 550 gets 50 mph consistantly got 30 pounds on you pizza man
40 to 45 on the 650 depending how I ride it
Bob I would suggest you look for a 750 maxim tang you will get another gallon of fuel and it is a direct bolt on upgrade.

I use my trip meter and always refill before I return home. I dont do to many short rides

 

That's a great option for taking it out on longer range trips! I've got a collection of tanks xj650 tanks going anyways - 2 red and 2 black, with matching sidecovers for all, for a quick color change if the mood strikes.

FYI I have 3 maxims in the garage. 2 complete, one in boxes as a rebuild project.

If the charge is being an XJ hoarder, I plead guilty by way of insanity - I'm just crazy about these bikes.

You don't have enough of these bikes yet to be considered a hoarder just one box of pots and a few tanks well you're on your way. One thing to look into for your fuel mileage as I think the Canadian bikes got bigger Jets. A bigger jet will drop you fuel mileage a little bit. We had a member here who had a mad max/rat bike kind of thing going and he used the fuel tank as a reoffender too bad it wasn't functional.

 

I average about 40 with my XJ700. Have gotten as high as 43 on an all highway trip and as low as 35 all in town. The advertised mileage for a New XJ700N in 1985 was only about 45 I think, and that was probably with better gas than we have today.

 

My since sold XJ650RJ gave mid 40's mpg's until I changed out the fuse panel for the blade type with soldered connections. With the new fuse panel it consistently gave low to mid 50's and ran like a new bike.

 

That is....unusual.

 

I was pretty shocked but pleased as well. It ran well before but was quite a bit nicer after the change. The fuse panel was changed because I broke off a tab so there must have been marked resistance for quite awhile. Last summer I had (also since sold) a Midnight Maxim 750 that would consistently return 50 mpg when ridden reasonably. I really don't think I am riding like a fuddy-duddy.
