Jason welcome, just noticed your post, @hogfiddles keeps the registry of the bikes. Plenty of information to help you here, some of the others will chime in.

Ask away for any issues that you have and you should get answers - the site traffic is a bit slower in the colder weather months and the 900 is a bit of a rare bird, even on this site. And welcome to the XJ world

Do you have a Haynes manual for your bike? Have you checked the oil? If bikes are off the road for a while and the petcock is faulty petrol can get into the oil. Check the oil level and make sure there is no fuel in it before trying to start it. If the original fuse box is in the bike with the glass fuses the clips can break and current does not flow properly. That should be replaced with a blade type fusebox. The ignition TCI box also needs a minimum voltage while cranking the starter motor to provide a spark at the plug. Try and start it and let us know, cheers.

thanks again, franz i havent ordered the manual yet but its first on the list.im changeing the oil and using a external fuel tank to see if it still wants to run.the odometer says 58k miles the previous owner claims it has 25k and the gauges were changed but thats probably not the case but ive been told the run a while so well see if it sounds okay .then ill adjust the valves clean the tank and clean the carbs and go from there

My machine had other gauges on it too, so not sure of the exact mileage. The main thing is good compression within spec over the four cylinders. Another thing is that the rings can stick a bit if the bike has not run for a while a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid down the spark plug holes frees them up, you may not need to do this. Yes do your valve check before any carburettor balancing. They will certainly need cleaned. And another thing I did not know about, at the bottom of each float bowl there is a small jet. Fuel flows from that jet up the brass tube on the carburettor body and enriches the mixture for cold starting. When you clean the carburettors make sure those jets are clear.

    Welcome aboard:)

of course it’s one of the early ones—- we only got a few of them to begin with, and they were all early ones because just after they came out, Harley got the gov’t to enact “The Harley Tariff” which put a quick end to them here.

to the point of yours—-it’s already on the registry, thanks for the info, I will update the file. I will also contact you privately to fill you in on the history of your bike. I know a previous owner ( at least the guy who had it when it was first put on the registry).
I am also editing your number in your post for privacy.

Yep, plenty of help is here :)

Was planning just a bar hopper custom but as of this morning I was trying to fire it up and there is no spark so I'm going to look into that but everything will depend on the condition of the engine

Being that the headlight is wrong, who knows what else may be wrong/disconnected/miswired/etc.....

According to the database, the info supplied to me is that at that time it was a parts bike. This is the first time for anyone else to submit this number.
