I saw this oil seal driver and thought "I Gotta Have It!"
    http://www.moto-pro.com/ProductPage.asp?strMPSID=FSDR35
Then I saw the price, for something that will get used a hand full of times...
I am not sure which dia the xj uses but thats one of the aval sizes.

I am tring to get the seal to seat right now and not having much luck w/ a wooden dowel and hammer.
Maybe I can go to the hardware store and get a pvc pipe, or simmilar.

Any thoughts? I would like to make something to accomplish the task(without damaging or marring a part)
Also something "easy" and readily avalible from a parts store would be nice too.

For seals in general - (I didnt look at the link and totally forgot the thread is about fork seals, and thne I chimed in)

I have been using a bit of pipe - 3/4(?) diameter and several inches, and a mounting flange, like if you were building a handrail from pipes, nipples, angles and Ts.
    like this:
    http://www.doityourself.com/invt/u234229
I can use it with the pipe through the item, like wheel bearing hubs - gravity helps hold everything aligned, or with the pipe to drive on - I do need at least full flat access. With this i cant drive over a large shaft - but I can hit the store and get a larger - up to 2" and with an adequate length of pipe have a reasonable chance of getting the task accomplished.
I haven't had to, but I could grind the flange to fit tighter areas. .

Cheap and easy, and not a big $$$ hit if it is lent or lost.

I can't remember the size needed for XJ's offhand - hope you have a caliper. Measure the outside diameter of the new seals (ie - 34mm), go to a local hardware store that specializes in industrial stuff (bring your caliper), and find a big-ass socket whose outside diameter is the size you need. If you have a discount place close to you that sells chinese stuff - all the better.
Again - I can't remember the size, but this is what I did - got the socket at Princess Auto here for about $10 (IIRC).

I was thinking go and get 2-3 ft of 1 3/4" pvc pipe.
Slide over the tube and tamp the oil seal into the lower leg

Kinda like this, a pic from a Honda GW fork rebuild, just googled the image. Sorry for any confusion 8O

*edit* Btw do they make 1 3/4" pvc?
    Not sure

The pipe is measured by inner diameter. I think you'll want 1 1/2" pipe, which they do make.
